I need advice for a friend who has just discovered that she has breast cancer. Could anyone recommend really good trusted private clinics in the UK for treatment. Thanks in advance.

Once again Tessa21 is the fountain of all knowledge but the OP didn't ask what's best she asked about private hospitals- you never know the friend may not be eligible for NHS care. I would expect that the OP or friend would research the recommendations and make her own decisions based on an informed choice. The surgeon I recommended is top of his field within the local NHS centre of excellence and even if seen privately he would refer patients to highly qualified and respected oncologists as and when needed. In fact my follow up treatment was done at the NHS award winning Northern Centre for Cancer Care (but as a private patient) therefore I'd consider I got the best of both worlds all my follow up consultations are with my chosen consultant at a date of my choosing and I always see him and not one of a team.

In truth the NHS does breast cancer care much, much better than any private hospital. Better support services such as wigs/colour me beautiful and clinical nurse specialists for prosthetics etc. Better clinical support if there is a problem - private hospitals do not deal with sepsis or DVTs. Better multidisciplinary working so better review of possible management and best recommendations. Breast cancer should not be managed in isolation by a single surgeon. NICE guidance says one-stop clinics and regional centre follow up. If you have no option but private then go to a NHS specialist centre offering private service such as Royal Marsden, Christie in Manchester or the private wing of a good NHS hospital that is a regional cancer centre.

i have 2 friends who had all their treatment in Dubai. There is a support group there called Breast Friends - might be worth contacting them for some help, advice and support. Where abouts in the UK is she going to be - 2 friends here have recently undergone treatment in the South. Can highly recommend their surgeons and they were beautifully looked after one in The Royal Marsden and the other had her chemo at the Nuffield in Guildford.
