Morning ladies,
We went to see Dr Marc Sinclair and he said DD has Idiopathic Scoliosis just under 30 degrees. We were absolutely overwhelmed as he said she must have an MRI, 2-3 times physiotherapy a week and must wear a specially designed brace. All at the same time!
Two months ago her Pediatrician, after an x-ray on my request, said she's fine and just at 20 degrees curve so just monitor for now but I wanted to make sure that his diagnosis was accurate.
Now I'm very confused and absolutely overwhelmed and considering a second opinion before we let DD undergo all that at once. I would highly appreciate any recommendation for another specialist here in Dubai, any experiences, if you had it how you went about it at this early stage?

Many thanks in advance!!

i obviously had the same difficulty as Countess Wrinkle posting the reply! Thank you Oldtimer for sharing your experience. I’m glad your daughter is all well now. The second opinion we sought confirms that DD didn’t progress from 20 degrees to 29 in the span of a month (quite a relief!). He thought both x-rays taken show 23-24 degrees which he considers as a mild case that should be addressed with physiotherapy only and no brace. MRI came back confirming scoliosis but not congenital which is a good thing too. We now feel we should consider more opinions until we decide on the most suitable treatment option. I thank you again ladies for all your well wishes and advices.

I'm very sorry to hear that your daughter has been diagnosed with scoliosis so young, it usually presents at puberty. I do have experience with this condition as my daughter was diagnosed at 13 with a 30 degree double curve. You will find that different consultants have different views ... my daughter saw an orthopaedic consultant at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, England. His view was that bracing simply put off the inevitable, and that once the brace was removed the spinal curve would progress to the same point that it would have done without it. This could have been specific to the type of curvature my daughter had, I don't know if he would have recommended bracing if she presented differently. She had 6 monthly check ups to assess the curvature and unfortunately by 15 years it had progressed to over 40 degrees which is the point they recommend surgery. She had 2 spinal rods inserted the length of her spine and it is now 2 years on.. I know for children who are still growing, if rods are needed , they now use extending rods which are extended by remote control! Prior to this invention young children would need repeated surgery to replace the rods. Please feel free to ask any questions and i'll do my best to answer.

Sorry to read your story, very stressful indeed. I can not recommend enough for you to visit Dr Anna Zickerman at Up and Running Wellness Sports Clinic, Dubai. Dr Anna is an extremely experienced and highly qualified doctor who specialises in all things sports medicine. She will advise you as to how best to proceed and who is the very best to see regarding your daughters condition. Personally, I would nver use anyone else and a quick search on here will show you how well recommended the clinic is. You will reqauire a medical doctor to sign off on an MRI not a chiro. Wishing you all the best, please do book and appointment for a second or third opinion. Many thanks for your advice! I will call Dr Anna’s clinic in the morning. We’ve done the MRI waiting for the results, meanwhile seeking second and third opinions to decide the most suitable treatment(s). All is very overwhelming to us as you can imagine, especially that she is very active swimmer and gymnast! Your thoughts, prayers and advices are highly appreciated. Thank you ?

I can not recommend enough for you to visit Dr Anna Zickerman at Up and Running wellness sports clinic Dubai, she is an extremely experienced and highly qualified doctor who specialises in all things sports medicine, plus. She will advise who to see and how to proceed. She has a UK trained great team there and top visiting surgeons. Personally, I would never use anyone until I have seen her and sought her advice for anything medical relating to spines, bones, musculoskeletal etc. It’s always worth a second or third opinion when it comes to such serious concerns, it’s important to get it right and see the very best. To sign off for an MRI on insurance you will need to see a Medical Doctor not just a Chiropractor. A quick search will show you how popular and highly recommended her clinic is. Wishing you all the best.

My sister was diagnosed with the same and went for an MRI which looked into any degenerative bone issues, etc that could have prevented her from going to a chiropractic doctor. I think an MRI is a must either way, nobody should treat her without that examination. She goes to a chiropractor who helps her tremendously, does specialised physiotherapy with the help of a woman who comes to her home, she also exercises on her own, pays attention to how she sits, for how long, etc....Her scoliosis is not insanely bad but it has become very bothersome to her as she works in an office and she gets a lot of back pain. I would recommend an MRI requested by your GP before jumping into anything (it won't cost you anything if you have medical insurance). Then visit Dr. Charles at the California Chiropractic Clinic in Healthcare City. Google the clinic, call them up and request for him to call you back first and see if he can help in any way, seeing your DD is 10 years old. If nothing else, a 3rd opinion is always helpful. There is no quick fix for scoliosis but a combination of treatments that do help long term manage the condition. My sister lives a full life but she is very disciplined with her exercising, etc... Hope this helps and your DD improves.
