Fun Things to Do in Myanmar

If you are the type of traveler who wants to steer away from all things shiny and cosmopolitan, then Myanmar is the place for you. As with its Southeast Asian neighbors, Myanmar has a colorful history of colonization and political turmoil. This is why it is a “late bloomer” among other Asian countries. Until recently, it has opened its doors wide open to tourism and the influx of tourists that head over to the land of the golden pagodas.

Here are the top 10 must-see places in Myanmar based on my experience:

1. Explore the beautiful Shwedagon Pagoda.

Located in Yangon, Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most popular pagodas in Myanmar and is one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites. It is believed to be the home of eight hairs of no less than Siddharta Gautama Buddha himself and relics of three former buddhas.

2. Visit the breathtaking and unique Bagan ruins.

Bagan is one of the most charming places I have ever been to. It’s like stepping into a completely different world once you are within the presence of the famous ruins. It is also the best place to watch the sunrise and the sunset as it tints the sky orange against the ruins down below.  These days, cycling tours are available for those who want to experience Bagan by breezing through the scenery. However, make sure you drop by and visit the ruins up close so you can explore the ancient temples and take fantastic photos.

3. Sail along Inle Lake.

The lake is an iconic destination for its rural charms and traditional way of life. Intha fishermen will show you how to row flat canoes with one leg while both their hands are busy fishing. Sail through floating gardens where fresh vegetables are planted and discover the simple way of life along Inle Lake, far different from the kind of life we are accustomed to now.

This golden rock has been a famous tourist attraction. It is a giant golden rock perched on the edge of a mountain. While it may seem odd for this golden rock to be a site for major Buddhist pilgrimages, it is actually very special for many Burmese go there to light candles, meditate and stick golden squares onto the rock’s surface.

5. Sample Myanmar’s cuisine.

Burmese food is acquired taste but if you open your eyes and mind to the unique flavors it has to offer, one might even fall in love with it. Don’t let an opportunity to try the famous Mohingga pass. It is a rice noodle soup made of fish, broth spices and garnished with hardboiled egg on top. It is the local favorite eaten for breakfast or any meal during the day. Restaurants big and small are scattered all over Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon), Myanmar’s capital. Sample their delicious cuisine and see for yourself what the rave about their dishes is all about.

6. Experience old Myanmar by strolling along Bogyoke Aung San Market.

Formerly known as Scott Market, it was built in 1926 during the British colonial period. It is a famous market for locals and tourists alike, which houses stalls of many local goods such as handicrafts, gems and other knick-knacks. It is the Burmese equivalent of the Middle East’s souks, with a section set-up like a bazaar. Fabrics, Burmese dresses and other local made goods can be bought here like tapestries and famous Burmese lacquer ware.

7. Experience Chinatown in Yangon.

Chinatown in Yangon is also an excellent area to sample Myanmar’s delicious cuisines. In the evening, it is the busiest where people flock to grab quick meals. It is an area of 24th to 18th street near Sule Pagoda in downtown. Experience street food like grilled skewers, congee and stir friend noodles all cooked by the street.

8. Visit the “Reclining Buddha” or Chaukhtatgyi Paya.

The Reclining Buddha is one of the most visited Buddhist sites in Myanmar. It is massive, with 65 meter in length. This gorgeous reclining Buddha is actually a replacement fifty years ago when a standing Buddha toppled over. In its place, this reclining one took over.

9. Go back in time and learn of Myanmar’s history at the National Museum of Myanmar.

Like in any new place that you visit, a trip to the National Museum is a must. This is to learn more about the cultural and historical relevance of the place you are touring. That way you are able to experience the local culture and traditions more. In order to appreciate Myanmar, get some background information on its backstory before further exploration of the country.

10. Explore Yangon by foot.

There is so much to explore if you walk around the small city by foot. This way you can find stores, food stalls and restaurants up close. Sample the Burmese city life by immersing yourself with locals. You will find that there are plenty of interesting things to love about Myanmar up close.

The next time you plan a trip, look into exploring one of Southeast Asia's gems-- Myanmar, also formerly known as Burma. You will never know how life and this country may surprise you with an adventure of a lifetime.
