Donating Blood in Hong Kong

Many people choose to donate blood as do new expats as they want to carry on donating as they had done in their home countries.

Donating Blood in Hong Kong

In any community the choice to donate blood is a personal one. However, it is a necessity as your donation can save a life. Many people choose to donate blood and when new expats arrive to Hong Kong, they want to carry on donating as they had done in their home countries.

Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS)
The Hong Kong Red Cross began its voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation programme in 1952. Currently, the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) is the only public institution providing blood to all hospitals, public and private, in Hong Kong. It has been managed by the Hospital Authority since December 1991. Since there is no substitute for blood, the supply of blood relies entirely on the goodwill of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors.
For more information about BTS visit their website.

Who Can Give Blood?

If you …..

  • Have good health

  • Weigh over 41 kg (90 lbs or above)

  • Are aged between 16 and 60

Please note the following:

To protect both blood donors and recipients, the Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) must stringently screen donors (health history questionnaire, haemoglobin and blood pressure checking etc.) and shall only accept blood donations from those who meet all the set eligibility criteria.

Donors aged 61 or above can continue to give until 70, if no less than one donation is made every 12 months; from 66 onward, an annual health assessment by the BTS medical staff is necessary.

Donors aged 16 to 17 need to have parental consent at the first donation and can give blood two times in a year, with an interval of no less than 150 days between two consecutive donations; adult (18 or above) males can give four times in a year, with an interval of no less than 75 days between consecutive two donations; whereas adult females can give three times in a year, with an interval of no less than 105 days between consecutive two donations.

Donors who wish to find out their next donation due date are advised to browse the BTS “eDonor” system to preliminary self-assess their donation eligibility online.
