Each pregnancy is different. A friend of mine just had a trickle. Whereas with my first it kept gushing til we got to the hospital. With my second I ended up bleeding as the placenta separated so they had to break my water.

Wickedangel_78, that must have been absolutely horrible having to go through what you and your baby had to. I can't even begin to imagine the added stress that hospital put you through

wickedangel_78 how terrifying!!! I can't believe that at the first sight of meconium they didn't rush you in for a c-section, after all, that is a typical sign of fetal distress!!! You are so lucky your LO was born safely

Didn't think that meconium was a sign of Foetal distress. Well, my Dr didn't make it feel that way anyway. She did however say that she was glad that we didn't wait any longer to do the induction. After they broke my bag at 9am, they decided to do an emergency CS at around 4pm due to DD's heart rate dropping whenever I contracted. This was at American Hospital, and I always felt in good hands.

yes, it is... it's also doubly important to get baby out quick if there's meconium in the fluid as there's a risk they'll breath it into their lungs, which is really bad news, considering how gloopy it is.

Meconial fluid means foetal distress as far as I know. Such an unsafe practice ...Where did you deliver ???

Al Wasel. & my baby was in distress & needed assistance to breath. It was a horrible experience. They didnt listen when I told them that I felt sth was wrong with the baby, I begged for a section but they refused until the monitor showed distress after 18 hrs & was rushed into the OR for emergency CS.

I just read your post Wiedangel_78 and im so sorry that happened to you. I have to say i had a horrendeous experience with Al Wasl with my miscarriage and subsequent complications simply beacuse they didnt listen to what i was saying. I feel for you and hope that everything is ok with you now and your bub. Just wanted to give you some support. Xx

Wow, it's like you were in the room when my water broke with DD as those were the exact words used!

Not a daft questions, this troubled me too when I was pregnant with DD1. In the end mine broke when I got up to the toilet in the middle of the night. Was just a small amount but definitely there and the contractions started straight away. I went to hospital as advised, sitting on a towel and with a couple of large pads on, and back home again after being checked out. Went for a 'pain relieving' bath and that is when they broke properly and I could feel it.

DD didn't arrived within 24 hours of them breaking and she was given doses of antibiotics for a day. This was standard practice in the UK for babies who don't arrive within 24 hours. If I hadn't gone into labour naturally I would have been induced the next day.

Not a daft question at all, I have a 5 month old baby and still wouldn't know, lol. My waters never broke. After 9 hours of labour, fully dilated and having pushing contractions, baby ready to come out, my waters were still intact and finally broken by a midwife and by that stage I didn't really notice much, definitely don't remember any sound or huge wave of water, maybe I should ask my DH what really happened, lol. I have also heard that sometimes the baby can come out sack & all, I guess this would have happened with DS if it wasn't broken manually?

It's hard to say how you water will break. My friend went to the hospital when she started to have really painful contractions. It turns out her water broke somewhere high and it was slowly flowing but not coming out. So in her case she didn't know...

For me the water started breaking slowly. First I thought I wet my pants, lol. But then the mucus plug started coming out and that's something you'll probably notice even if it happens in the shower.

LOL, so if they break at home, then I have the constant trickling, then how do I deal with that? Its not like a pad would be of much help. Would it mean that I would be waddling into the hospital with wet pants? Oh dear, now I am having embarrassing visions of myself! LOL Whaaaaa?

When my waters broke with my son there was a huge gush. With DD - there was the most amazing sound, like something hitting really tight plastic - but only a trickle - so I wasn't really sure. It wasn't until I vomitted an hour later that there was a gush LOL

Thanks heaps! In my perfect little world my waters would break at the hospital...LOL but I know it may not be like that.

A word to the wise... get some waterproof sheets and towels and have one on your bed, one on the sofa and one in the car - amniotic fluid is apparently notoriously difficult to get out of upholstery!

Wasn't that in a Roddy Doyle book? The girl being told by her mam to sit on plastic and her dad being horrified. It made me laugh.

Mine broke as I sat down on the loo for my morning wee...heard a faint pop and the "wee" kept trickling...
It carried on for about 20 minutes or so, wasnt too heavy - a pad did the trick and just kept going to the bathroom. Contractions started 3 hours later...they were very mild. I remember saying to mum and DH "Oh these contractions are a breeze...they're actually quite funny!" Hehehehe...I wasn't saying this at 6cm's!!!!

My water broke minutes before leaving home to the hospital for my induction. I was getting dressed then I felt water all over my legs it kept flowing & it had some green things (meconium). I didnt really know what to do, but I stayed calm as they were expecting me at the hospital anyway Big Grin I even had some make up on as I wanted to look pretty during labour & I wasnt bothered much about it. I didnt have any contractions or dilation after it broke. My water kept running for 18 hrs with meconium & some blood. They induced me 3 times for 18 hrs before they gave up Big Grin My body was sooo stubborn - no dilation or conrtractions. I ended up with emergency CS.

My biggest surprise was to find out there was so much blood mixed with the fluid. I was expecting clear/brownish liquid but it was very ****** and I rushed to the hospital thinking there was something wrong!! There I found out it was normal ) so no worries about the shower..you will notice because of the blood...and by the way, my water kept running for 6 hours!!! lol

Mine broke like Niagra falls all over my mum's leather couch!!! Poor dad did a great impersonation of Mr Jones in Dad's Army (UK wartime sit com) and paced the floor telling me not to panic LOL!! DH picked me up and took me to hospital with a large towel stuffed up my dress which was a maxi light denim thing (well it WAS the 80s!!!)

I was expecting a trickle but I got a flood!
I heard and felt a pop when my waters broke and it kept on flowing for a good 30 minutes, so I must of had a lot of water!
My leather sofa was drenched but after a clean it is fine so don't worry too much about the sofa

it also depends how much fluid is between your baby's head and the big wide world... first time, it was just a little bit and no trickle... and I have no recollection of any more coming out... second time it was if someone had chucked a bucket of warm water at my legs!

WAAAAAYYYYYY TMI! rofl!

Exciting times!

With my first labour my waters didn't break until just before DS was born and I had no idea as I was in a pool, but it really didn't matter at that point! The second time was very underwhelming! During early labour I felt a little pop followed by a trickle, but no gush. Almost immediately afterwards my contractions became much stronger.

Your waters are much more likely to break during labour, when there are other obvious signs.

Just try to relax and enjoy your last days of peace and freedom!!

I think if you get up the baby's head plugs the hole, so to speak! Big Grin.

I mainly felt it when I shifted around on the bed but I had a big ole pad in place too, and that seemed to contain it when I got up (before I had the epidural). Get yourself some of those huge pads!
