Just a slight correction on the maid issue. You do need to sponsor the maid eventhough they come under Ministry of Manpower. It is cheaper and easier to get a maid there depending on the agency fees. Starting salary for an Indonesian maid(new and inexperience) is now SGD450 plus you will also need to pay a maid levy of SGD265 per month. Agency fees will most likely cost a few hundred dollars only which covers processing, medical and insurance fees(which you need to top up a little).
If you are looking for experience Filipino maids, their salary will be higher.
Public transports are easily accessible. There are many nursery and childcare centres. Can't advise on the housing as it would depend on the location of your child's school. Check out the propertyguru website to give you a general idea. You can still negotiate from the published price! HTHs.

maid is relatively cheaper. the good thing is that, anyone works in Spore are registered and under the Ministry Of Labour/Manpower of the government. No sponsorship like here. So everyone is covered equally.Agency maids are everywhere. Heaps and easy to get one although as you know, just like anywhere , easy to get probs with some.
Nursery wise, there are the expats nursery which I'd highly recommend. One car is enough. Petrol is pricey. Public transport is efficient. But getting crowded with more foreign talents coming in eg. Filipinos,China etc. Food is cheaper in Spore. Of course if you going for the fine dining then you will get great outcome from it. Local food is haven. Food is celebration and celebrated within the locals. 24 hours food centres open always.
Apartment and house/detached/bungalows depending on the area. But minimum ready to pay the amount I stated. If you the breadwinner and all, as this is my personal input of monthly salary of SGD25,000 is comfortable. Of course as it would base on job profession and package.
hope this helps. edited by tipahtertipu on 16/05/2011

Thanks Tipahtertipu - that's what I meant. Each person has different expectations for quality of life and relationship with money so near impossible to ask what would be the minimum salary required. Seemed better to try and draw a comprison. I would be the 'breadwinner' and have a baby that would need to go to nursery so trying to work out what salary is needed to make it work. Do most people rely on public transport as cars are so expensive? Do you know how much nursery fees are? How much does it cost to employ a maid? Would it be much cheaper for an apartment of a similar standard? Are there any areas that you could recommend?
Really appreciate your advice.
Thanks

We're renting a four bedroom villa in Um Suqeim right now, and we already know we're going to have to downgrade to two/three bedroom aparment for the same price. A villa is out of the question for us. Rents are definitely much higher in SG...

Thread is about Singapore, the country not Springs, the Dubai suburb.

We've looked into this before, and really like Singapore as a next destination for us (we have two dogs who would go with us). Your dog would have to do 1 month in quarantine, whether pet passported or not, at Singapore, and this you should book *now*, as quarantine spaces are very limited. But I believe the quarantine faciltlies are 5* and air conditioned, and you can visit regularly, so could give you time to find the villa you want while not having the dog in tow. Singapore is very dog-friendly, so I would have no worries about mine staying in kennel facilties there. Good luck!

Hi lemon drops, that great, we have no children but just our Labrador ! Have pretty much just found out that the dog would be accepted but quarantined for 30 days only. Good point about tax - didn't know that. The mist important thing for us is to look at housing and some of the estate agent website I've found have been really busy, too much stuff on them which makes it impossible to navigate. Thanks for your help so far :-)

Hi Quicksilver, I don't live in SG yet, but we are planning to do so later this year, so I'm doing the same research as you. From what I've found out so far, if you have children, you will need to sort our their schooling and then look at housing options close by the make the school runs more bearable.
Cost of living is far more expensive in SG, particularly rents, cars and schooling (but not as much as the first two). From what I've read everything else is similiar to Dubai or slightly cheaper. You'll also need to factor in that in Singapore your DH will get taxed, so you'll need to deduct 10% to 15% off the salary offer.

I know there are a few women on here that have lived in Singapore. My DH has a possibility of a job there but I just need to ask aces questions please. I would like some recommendations of real estate agents for renting a 3-4 bed villa (not apartment) and any names of good areas. Just a general background on cost of living and finally we have a dog, he has his pet passport, all valid and also up to date but just need to know if he could go straight there and is accepted (no quarantine or any other strange rules about dogs). Any info from you ladies would be most appreciated. Thank you!
