Unfortunately you won't avoid a big loss. That's just the way the secondhand market is in Dubai - well, just about anywhere really.

Best resale is on Toyotas & Jeep Wrangler (dealers almost fight each other to get good ones) in our experience.

At the time we researched this, a couple of years ago, we found out that Toyota Prados are the ones which retain their value best, even when bought second-hand in the first place (IYSWIM). We couldn't afford one, even second-hand, so I have a Ford Explorer on which we hope not to make too great a loss when we leave, unless of course I do major damage to the bodywork when parking..

Thanks ladies....was trying to avoid a big loss....any ideas ? Seems I am on the right track regards brands....not used to such new cars as had a ten year old rav from a farmers wife in the uk though mileage greater here so figured a newer car would be a safer bet.

Of those you've listed, the Pajero would possibly have the 'best' resale. Keep in mind though that if you're buying a three yr old car and selling it as a six yr old car, there will be massive loss in value. Toyotas are great cars, also with reasonable resale value, so the RAV would be a good choice too. Both of those cars have ok off-road capabilities too.

Certainly seems that Pajero's re-sell very easily.

I had a Ssang Yong Acyton (sold it fairly recently) and I found it to be great value for money - Mercedes engine, so very reliable, and a lot of car for your money. Worth having a look at.

I have been to a few dealers without success ....budget not high but need a reliable one as have a baby. Been looking at Nissan x trail , MIT pajero, rav4, Hyundai tucson and qashqai....dealers told me ex trail not a good option as they have stopped making them so parts expensive...I really like pajero and wonder if an 2009 model would re sell well in say 3 years? Any general advice ? Budget 50,000 max .min 2008 model and pref low mileage though understand its Dubai and mileage can be high....I may buy from dubizzle as have a list of companies who can look over cars thanks to expat woman Dubai ladies!!
