A massive fire has taken over the Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre, better known as the Kuwait Opera House, in Kuwait City.

Fire Erupts in Kuwait’s New Opera House

A massive fire has taken over the Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre, better known as the Kuwait Opera House, in Kuwait City.

No injuries and no casualties have resulted from the blaze. The Kuwait Fire Service Directorate crews controlled and put out the blaze shortly afterwards.

The blaze has reportedly started in the engineers’ room but the causes are not yet known. Videos and photos posted online show black smoke coming out of the centre and visible from distances across the city. Workers were running out of the building towards safety. 


The building, which includes a 2,000-seat opera house, was recently opened in October 2016 and cost some $775 million to build. The extent of the damage has yet to be determined
