Snow White & The Huntsman

Kristen Stewart leads an all-star cast in the epic-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman. The Welsh country side provided the beautiful yet dark setting for the computer generated castle where the Evil Queen (played by Oscar winner Charlize Theron) rules supreme.

Snow White & The HuntsmanThe storyline follows the Brothers Grimm classic tale closely enough so as not to offend die-hard fans of the classics but the plot provides some interesting and dark twists along the way. The story begins in the beautiful kingdom where the queen pricks her finger and as she sees the blood drop into the snow she wishes for a daughter with skin as white as snow and lips as red as blood. This beginning pulls the audience in because it is one that we have heard many times before from childhood.

The epic tale starts off when the king remarries the evil queen and she takes over the kingdom transforming it from lush greenery to a place of death and misery. Rupert Sanders made some brilliant choices for his queen as she is pure evil but you also see vulnerability in her that almost makes you pity her and understand her character. She is given a lot more depth in this movie. Chris Hemsworth is another one to watch as he gives layers to his huntsman, there is conflict and sadness that shines through the rough exterior of his character.

This tale contains all of the elements that we know, from the enchanted mirror, to the dark forest, the seven dwarfs and of course the poisoned apple. The other great thing is that even though the director chose to take some long shots of a few beautiful scenes they do not hinder the pace of the movie.

If you hadn’t planned on seeing this movie on the big screen I urge you to reconsider. The epic fighting scenes are brilliantly portrayed without too much gore. There is the right amount of magical elements within the film that ensure it’s not thwarted in semi realism but it also does not venture to far into the magical realm thus keeping the audience grounded within the storyline. It is a movie made for children and adults alike, so perfect for a night out with the family. If nothing else a true testament to the fact that this movie is enthralling is that in a packed Dubai cinema, not a single phone rang, not a single conversation was held. The audience was actually watching.
