International Schools

American International School of Monrovia

Over 40 years ago -- with the arrival of a large expatriate community involved in everything from missionary work to mineral excavation -- a need arose to provide an education for expatriate children.  Thus, American Cooperative School came into being. Starting out with just a handful of students, ACS evolved into a school of over 600 students and was known as one of the top American-International schools in Africa. Shareholders of the school were, and continue to be, multi-national companies, members of the diplomatic community, and qualified local Liberians in search of a quality U.S. Education.

Accommodation

Expats are mostly concentrated within the capital, Monrovia. The area of Sinkor is the residential as well as commercial of all the districts within the capital. Major hotels and business including diplomatic missions of countries are located within this town. There are several residential communities like PLmkor, Jorkpentown, Fiamah, and Lakpazee. However accommodations in Liberia can be expensive with 1 bedroom apartments going from $1,000 to $1,500 per month and 3 bedroom apartments at $950 to $3,167 depending on the proximity to the city center. It is highly advised to arrange for accommodations prior to travelling to the country.

Driving License

Expats may use an international driving license to drive legally in Liberia. However, due to the current road infrastructures and loose traffic laws, driving in Liberia is hazardous. It is much more recommended to take a shared taxi to navigate within the city. Taking a taxi alone is also slightly dangerous as petty crimes are common.

Healthcare

The healthcare facilities in Liberia are extremely limited and poor in quality. Expats usually repatriate to their own countries or fly to neighbouring South Africa to seek treatment for major cases. It is therefore highly advised to take a comprehensive health insurance that can cover cost of repatriation and evacuation. Also, arrange legal transit to South Africa in case. Medication supply in the country is lacking so stock up on personal medicines before travelling. Take precautionary vaccination especially against Yellow Fever and Malaria as mosquito-borne illnesses are prevalent.
