He worked for DG Jones? Apparently the firm is still in operation in Dubai. He had Aussie and English colleagues.

For a few hours last night and this morning, the spectre of our having to leave Dubai and go back to Europe raised its ugly head and I realized that Dubai is now more my home than anywhere in Europe I start getting grumpy about things and then hear the call to prayer and see people stop their cars to pray by the side of the road and my heart misses a beat. I just love the skyline and seeing the Burj Al Arab in particular is a joy.

No idea. Was before I met him! Will ask him when he gets home. I met him when he was home in between contracts,, he was a CQS and retired last year when we left Doha. He was supposed to go back to Dubai back in the 70s but I put paid to that LOL! We got engaged and he ended up with a good job in Glasgow where he remained until he was made redundant at the age of 59.

I popped down there in my lunch hour & picked up a couple of lamb shanks that have been slow cooked in an olive and citrus sauce. If i get back before husband might be able to get away with banging them both in a pan & passing them off as my own creation!

The only thing i miss is the changing of the seasons and my lying in bed listening to the wind and rain bash against the windows. I solved the latter by downloading a sleep app for i phone and it sends me right off and reminds me of home :-)

Joyce, welcome in advance to our fair city. Be sure to get DH and you too to explore the older parts of Dubai. So much to see and do and you'll see much more of the real M.E.

Thank you DH was actually one of the "founding fathers" of modern Dubai as he worked there in the early 70s. We love real culture and have visited many Arabic countries. Doha was culturally a disappointment apart from the rebuilt souq and much preferred our visits to Oman although Qatar is beginning to see where they went wrong demolishing their older areas. We look forward to visiting DS and will head to the original areas no doubt. x

I think one of the only things i miss is the glasgow banter. Like the bus drivers etc. Always a giggle. If I could transport the glesgae banter here then that would be good. Big Grin

Missed home from the minute we arrived in Doha. Been back home almost 18 months now and love it! Yes I still post on here as I enjoy the banter!! It's been fab to be part of the Jubilee year and being amongst family and friends and the beautiful British countryside. My DS is Dubai bound next month for about 2/3 years and we all have such mixed feelings. The recession is still biting hard here in the UK and he is going to Dubai with a rather heavy heart. We know that he will do well financially and no doubt will make loads of friends but he'd rather be staying in his fab flat overlooking Edinburgh castle and continuing with his life here. He wasn't impressed by either Doha when he visited us, or Dubai when he paid a visit to a friend who lives there but is willing to give it a go as it will serve a purpose so to speak. Home is where the heart lies. So looks like we will be celebrating Christmas in Dubai!

I miss lots about home, but not enough to go home! I have to disagree with you about the customer service here though! We have bought lots of big items, furniture, whiteware, etc and it has always been delivered within days, in the uk if you order a sofa set it could take six weeks!

This is something my friends and family back home couldn't believe. Ordered the furniture on Tuesday night and it was delivered and put together on the Saturday. Even the couple of things we had problems with were sorted and put right the same day.
That's customer service Not having to wait up to 3 or more months for delivery, or bringing a flat pack home yourself and trying to build it

Among other things I miss the fresh air. Always suprises me how fresh the air is even in the airport carpark!

I cannot agree more! I haven't been back to the UK since I arrived last January and don't have any plans to do so. The only things I miss are stolling down to the pub in a pair of jeans and leaving work on a Friday evening and going off to my house in Whitstable, which was like being on holiday every weekend. But Whitstable will still be there when I eventually go back!

I ve recognized that Customer Care is NOT excisting, that being organized a word you have to look up in a dictionary first and that i miss the sometimes easy way to get things without spending a fortune.

Yes, definitely. Been here almost 6 years and I miss home the most during these long summer months. I have learned to just embrace how things are here. You can't fight the way it works. I have found that outlook makes it easier to swallow on those days when you are ready to snap someone in two! I def miss the ease of getting things done, wonderful on line shopping, and being able to pay for everything with plastic. We have tried to fill our home with most things from our home country, so that also makes it easier to be surrounded by "normalcy" in our eyes.

I miss my family (sometimes) and my friends. But would not trade being there for being here.
