I hope you get it all sorted SG...that must be very frustrating! The most important thing for pool water hygiene is the chlorine level. Is it a self-chlorinating system or do you have to add chlorine? To be comfortable to swim in, pH etc has to be right too, but it's the chlorine that kills the nasties.
Thanks ladies, i will ask maintenance to adjust the setting to 2 cycles of 4 hours..We are no longer on speaking terms with the company that built the pool as they botched the tiling and this has been repaired twice already and is still in need of repair.. They also left our pump running for the last 3months on continuous with the water heater turned up to full.. Being pool novices we didn't know what to look for, we are getting better now but that is the reason i asked on EW as you cant trust these people you pay to come to your house and supposedly do a good jobedited by ScottishGal4 on 14/08/2012
We ran our pool pumps four hours on/four hours off all year as recommended by our maintenance company. Our pool was heated and chilled - heated to 30c in winter and chilled to 30c in summer. As Ashes said, in the hotter months bacteria will build up (even at lower water temperatures) and if you're going to heat your pool in the colder months it's doubtful that having the pumps running for just six hours/day is going to maintain a comfortable temperature. This assumes that your heater system works via the pumps, ie heated water enters the pool when the pumps are working replacing cooler water already in the pool, which is how our system worked. As for your pool heater being on for the last month, unless the thermostat was set at something above 36c the heater probably wasn't even working so it may not have had any bearing on your DEWA bill. Again, this assumes that your pool heater system has a thermostat. To be honest, if you have a new pool and the heater was installed at the same time I'd get in touch with the company and ask them to explain how everything is supposed to work and the optimum way to use it.
With the extreme heat here in summer you need to be running your pool filter for longer than 6 hours a day - ours is set from 6am-12pm and then again from 3-9pm. If you don't run it for long enough, bacteria will build up in the water and your family will be getting unexplained ear infections, colds, uti's etc etc!
thanks green-ish, just had our new pool guy set it for 3hours in the morning and 3 in the evening.. hopefully that will work out well..heater is now off so hopefully we will notice a decrease in DEWA next month...Im still in shock that the other company didn't tell us the heater was on.. So angry about that..
I'm in Australia but assume the basics of running a pool are the same everywhere. Our pool testing guys recommend 8 hours a day during the swimming season...4 hours early in the morning and 4 hours evening/night. They say 4-6 hours a day off-season or when nobody is using the pool for an extended period. We get the water professionally tested & adjusted monthly and just keep the acid up ourselves in between.
Hi ladies, so our pool is finally up and running. We've hired a maintenance company but i would like to know how long you are running your pumps for? Want to try manage our dewa bills appropriately while still having a lovely pool to use..The 2nd question i have is in regard to the heater... We've just discovered ours has been on for a month... : ( Now that its off i hope the electricity usage will go down a bit. In the cooler months how often do i need to have the heater on to maintain a nice pool temperature. Thanks
