Climate & Weather in Oman

Oman's weather is the coolest of all the Gulf countries because part of its sea lies on the Indian Ocean.

Climate & Weather in Oman

Granted that Oman is a desert town in an arid region of the Gulf, however the climate here differs slightly to the countries that surround it due to the fact that Oman is quite mountainos and that part of its coast lies on the Indian Ocean. Oman is the only Gulf country to have monsoon season and to have lush natural vegetation.

Desert Climate in Oman

The best time to visit Oman is between November and mid-March, when the cooler air brings the mountain scenery sharply into focus and daytime temperatures average 25°C. This is the peak tourist season where the coldest, seen along the coast, was 11 degrees C. There are some rainy days, but they're thin on the ground regardless of the season. But when it rains for much more than a half hour, there can be flooding. People and cars are often washed down wadis during rainstorms.

For the rest of the year, much of Oman is oppressively hot and hazy, particularly between May and August when the temp doesn't go below 42oC or 43oC and can rise to 53oC (127F). But it's at its worst when it's in the low 40's with 90+% humidity, which also happens. If you wear glasses, they steam over when you go outside, and condensation runs down the outside of the windows.

The redeeming summertime feature is the khareef, the mid-June to late-August rainy season in southern Oman. Many Gulf visitors flock to this area to picnic under the drizzle on Dhofar’s’s grassy hills. The rain (and the green) vanishes by mid-September.
