The vacuum packs at Spinneys definitely say "defrosted" on them. They are 'good' because they are pumped with water and 'spices' to make them tender and tasty.

Just looked at the packs I have and doesn't say defrosted anywhere on the packs.

Mine does. (yep...have some in the fridge despite my protests )

On the back under ingredients - "Chicken (defrosted), water, salt, phosphate, starch..." Ick...not feeling like eating it now!

Chicken in a white polystyrene tray, clear plastic wrap is fresh and can be frozen.

I only purchase chicken (for pets) at Waitrose and the above is what the butcher advised.

The fresh free-range organic chookies from France are delicious but, quelle horreur ... the price!! Aust $32 !!!!

Oh no we must have cast iron stomachs as I have been buying the chicken in the black trays that has been vaccum packed as its been the best chicken I have found. I have frozen many packs and have defrosted it and none of us have been ill. The packs never said anything about not freezing.Whaaaaa?

Exactly my question...hence 'spices' in inverted commas. Seems there is no requirement here to list exactly what's in the food we buy. Pumping it with water only bugs me 'cause we're paying for the weight of that water...lol

It depends what the "spices" are, for example, MSG may be added to make the chicken tasty and tender but there are some health concerns regarding MSG.

Just remembered when I first got here I bought a pack of chicken in a white tray from C4 and stuck it in the freezer when I took it out to defrost I dropped it and when I picked it up I saw a tiny label on the back and it said do not refreeze so that went it the bin. So the black and white tray theory doesn't make sense.

perhaps Nils was making a general comment about food from the gulf and neighbouring region? I sometimes say 'local' when I mean anything from the region. I am not sure what saudi or kuwait chicken would be like but Im sure it cant be fully regulated beyond the UAE borders. I find the Spinneys and Al Maya chicken good but Im trying to give up chicken altogether.

This concerns me. IF all local produced chicken is hormone free then are the comments from OF&C simply inaccurate or a deliberate untruth?

This concerns me too. I hope it's simply inaccurate...and if it is, Nils should correct what he's saying. I will email him today and ask for clarification.

Either way, I buy local chicken only when the kids haven't had chicken for a while, they are asking for it and I just can't afford organic. I detest supporting such a cruel industry, but the budget doesn't always allow for my preferences.

Weeks would make more sense. Just could not get my head round 19 days.

19 days is what he said. I remember clearly because I was horrified and a few of us at the talk he gave questioned this point specifically because it just didn't make sense. But I have now heard him, on more than one occasion, say 19 days. Awful.

This was discussed at some lenght a few months ago. I had a friend who was a qualified ISO inspector who was employed by one of the chicken farms out here. She told me that no hormones are used on the chicks and the feed is carefully watched hence her job!! I dont think the local population would even concider eating these chicks if the rumours were true! Co-op does a roaring trade selling boxes at a time. Frozen chicks are more likely to have problems due to storage and handling issues.

i wouldnt be too surprised at the 19 days claim - i remember reading that the turkeys for christmas are 'grown' from an egg into those huge fully grown birds in a matter of weeks....ugh

Ive been buying the vegeterian 'chicklets' from Organic and they are divine. Made of vegeterian ingredients but tastes like a crumbed chicken breast. Waitrose has a nice new range of vegeterian burgers, steaks and fake chicken which the kids would not realise wasnt meat and much much healthier.

Absolutely, but at the same time, they should not have to interrogate vendors at every corner - they should be able to trust the produce that they are being sold and so at the very least, labelling should be clear and unambiguous.

Waitrose have assured me that the black-packaged stuff (I won't call it chicken) will shortly be clearly indicated "previously frozen - do not freeze".

Yes we eat local chicken. I once contacted one of the local chicken growers, and they assured me that growth hormones are banned by law in the UAE, so none of the UAE chickens are contaminated with growth hormones. That probably explains their small size too.

They kill them when they are young- they are not full grown.
The local population like a small bird - at least that is what I was told by the breeders in Saudi.

Back to poofs! LOL

You must have watched the same programmes I have, Oakley!

... and to those who may think that we can't change anything, well, as I said earlier, public outcry in the UK was such that all the supermarkets changed - even that behemoth Tescos (that has been known to make producers cry) and Asda (that's part of Walmart).

I wrote one email to Waitrose to bring the ingredients list issue to light (they were unaware of it) and they did a proper investigation and have resolved to change their labelling. Imagine what would happen if everyone who felt strongly about it also wrote to them to tell them it was unacceptable?
