Thanks for this! We use firefox and google chrome, so I'm feeling a bit less vulnerable now.

Thought it was worth copying/pasting this here, as I know quite a few mac users (myself included) in Qatar.


Warning to all MAC users. There is a trojan virus that has come to light in the past 48hrs call MAC Defender...do not open this programme or download it as it is a virus!

I just spent the last few hours getting rid of this off my MACbook. Its a malicious virus and people need to be aware that it is hitting MAC computers. It seems to be linked to viewing fairly harmless pictures through google image search - the common ones from the last few hours were 'Mediterranean holidays' and 'piranhas'. I was doing research for a presentation and had clicked on a picture of a 'foot' i wanted to copy! Once you click on the picture it opens the virus as an MAC antivirus software programme (fake obviously) and starts telling you that your computer have lots of viruses on it! Try not to download anything, and don't buy anything it advertises or enter any security passwords....I didn't do any of these things cos I thought the whole thing was off straight away but it still managed to download onto my computer. It seems that some people have gone as far as giving credit card details! Be warned, don't do it.

You can get rid of it off the computer if you follow the steps that have been put up in the last few hours on the Apple Support website. It takes a bit of time to get rid of it but the advice works.
