They're well underway with that extension. There will be connections eventually from D and E rings as well, which will zip straight over the top of F-ring into NDIA as well.

Yeah it is. The bit past Airforce roundabout still hasn't completed (or really started, although I haven't been up that way in a while).

Wasn't part of it supposed to be a nice, slightly straight road starting at the R/A after Al Jazeera Academy, Abu Hammour and coming out at the Airport R/A which didn't involve zig-zagging through the big church/Barwa Village?

What do you mean exactly? I've been driving on it for 18 months, but it keeps getting extended. The oldest bit is the bit in front of the Sharq/Mariott. The newest bit is the Barwa Village junction, but it looks like they have plans to extend it even further, all the way into Wakra.
