Doha  British School

Doha British School (DBS) opened in October 1997 and has grown steadily over recent years to offer an education to students from pre-school to Year 13. Since 2008, the school has occupied new, purpose-built premises that include facilities for a variety of specialist subjects in addition to well designed classrooms and sports facilities. The school has been designed to accommodate up to 1,200 students. The school was originally called Doha Montessori & British School (DMBS) and changed to Doha British School (DBS) in 2011.

DBS offers a British style educational based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales with a modified Montessori programme for early years. The medium of instruction is English but cultural diversity is celebrated. Currently, the student body comprises 65 different nationalities.

The school currently has classes from Pre-School to Year 13. The Primary and Secondary classes follow a British style educational programme using the National Curriculum of England and Wales and International Baccalaureate for Years 12 and 13, whilst the Pre-School classes follow a modified Montessori syllabus for early years. The School is a multi-national educational institution catering for children from over 65 countries around the world. The language of instruction is English.

The British Curriculum at Primary and Secondary Levels: the curriculum that the School uses is an enhanced National Curriculum of England and Wales. This is recognised worldwide as a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum.

All classes in Key Stages 1, 2, and 3 are taken by teachers having British or equivalent teaching qualifications and are experienced in delivering the British National Curriculum in the UK or International Schools. The core subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science are complemented by the foundation subjects of Geography, History, Art & Design, French, DT, ICT, P.E., and Music. Arabic and Quranic studies are also available to native Arabic speakers.


Facilities

The school has new high quality facilities for learning which include classes with interactive whiteboards and ICT suites used by all ages in the school.

Additional facilities include:
Swimming Pool: The 20 metre indoor swimming pool is used by all pupils and hosts inter-school meetings.
Games Pitch: The astro-turf games pitch is used for games, PE and community matches.
Courts: The school has courts for tennis, netball, basketball and volleyball.
Gymnasium: The purpose built gymnasium is well equipped for pupils in all Key Stages.
Multi-purpose Hall: The multi-purpose hall is used for after-school activities, dance, trampolining, music and theatrical productions. It has a fully demountable stage and seating for 800. It has a professionally designed and equipped light and sound system.
Libraries: The school has separate libraries for Primary and Secondary pupils.
Design and Technology Room: The Design and Technology Room is equipped with lathes, jigsaws, woodworking tools and computer-aided design technology.
Music: There is a wide variety of musical instruments including keyboards, percussion and strings.
Science Laboratories: Four fully-equipped science laboratories designed by specialists.

 

Admissions Policy

Applications to Doha British School for the academic year 2012-2013 are now closed.

1. Doha British School (DBS) offers a British-based curriculum and lessons (apart from Arabic) are delivered in English. In order to access the curriculum pupils must have:

English as a first language, or adequate proficiency for their age in speaking, reading and writing.
Previous experience of a British style curriculum and education.

2. DBS experiences a high number of applications and we welcome, in particular, applications from:

Parents with children already at school
Parents who are members of staff

3. In the event that there are insufficient places available, DMBS operates a waiting list system which, in addition to the criteria above, is administered chronologically.

4. Places will only be offered following successful completion of an Entrance Assessment test and, if required, an assessment interview.

5. Places will only be confirmed once the fees due have been settled.
