 Park House English School

Park House English School was founded in Al Mansoura in September 1994. The school hosts children from 64 different nationalities, from Nursery age to Year 13. In September 2005, the school moved to a purpose built campus, providing large, modern facilities for all pupils.

The campus includes an Early Years block for Nursery and Reception children; Primary department for Years 1 through to 6 and a separate Secondary department for Years 7 through to 13. In addition we have an excellent Sports Centre which includes a large multi-sports hall, 25m swimming pool, all-weather football pitch and multi-sport outdoor court. The school has a modern purpose built art department, a music centre and a 6th form Common Room.

Curriculum

Key Stage 1 and 2 - Years 1 to 6

Throughout the school there is a 3-form entry. Staff are fully qualified and experienced to make children feel at ease and settled in their surroundings, so they can progress and develop their skills thoroughly in reading, writing and arithmetic.

The school follows the National Curriculum for England in the teaching of English, Maths and Science. The International Primary Curriculum has been adopted to cover History, Geography, Music, Art, IT, PHSE and PE to provide children with a broader education.

There are daily Arabic lessons for first language Arabic speakers from Year 1 to Year 6. Basic Arabic is provided for non-Arabic speakers from Reception to Year 4. Muslim children also have Quran lessons.

French is taught to Years 5 & 6 with an emphasis on speaking and listening, in tune with I.G.C.S.E. requirements.

There is a system of internal assessment and reporting so that each child's progress and development can be noted. Parents receive a report at the end of each term. There are Parents' Evenings in the Autumn and Summer terms when there is an opportunity to speak to the teacher about your child's progress. Teachers are happy to speak to parents at other times to discuss children's progress.

The school offers language support, but does not have a special needs department. Homework is given to all Key Stage 2 children and staff expect it to be done diligently.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) curriculum at Park House is a planned three-year programme based on the National Curriculum of England. It builds on the work covered in Key Stage 2 and prepares students for progression to Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) where IGCSE courses are followed in a wide range of subjects. In Years 12 and 13 students will work towards AS/A2 levels.

A wide range of subjects are offered in the first three years of Secondary School. All students take English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Design Technology, French or Arabic, Music, History, Geography, I.T and P.E. In Years 7, 8 and 9 there are three tutor groups with 24 students in each. Most classes are mixed ability and boys and girls are taught together except in P.E. In Year 9, students are grouped according to ability in English and mathematics.

All students in Key Stage 3 have an additional one hour English skills lesson each week, building up spelling, punctuation, grammar and other essential skills which are central to success across the whole curriculum.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations are set and assessed in the UK and acknowledged by colleges and universities worldwide.

All students work towards IGCSE examinations during Years 10 and 11 with most taking the examinations in Year 11. However, a small number of students may take Mathematics or I.T. earlier, they will then follow an extended programme of study in Year 11. The first small group of IGCSE candidates took examinations in 2007 with 90% gaining grades A* - C. Results in recent years have also been excellent.

The following subjects are taken by all students: English Language (first or second language), English Literature, Mathematics.

All students will also take EITHER physics, Biology and Chemistry OR Double Award Science, which is the equivalent of two IGCSE's.

In addition students choose four other subjects from the following:

Arabic - First Language or Second Language
Art
Business Studies
Economics
French Foreign Language
Geography
History
I.T
Music
P.E.
Sociology

All students will take general PE lessons. Students will receive advice on the most appropriate subjects to choose and there will be ample time for consultation with parents before subject choices are finalised.

Post 16

AS Level examinations are offered in year 12 with students usually taking four subjects. In year 13 three subjects are studied for the A2 examinations. Students are offered guidance and support when applying to universities worldwide, with visiting speakers and visits to local universities providing up to date information. In addition to the academic curriculum, students are offered general PE and the opportunity to undertake school or community service. The ′Sixth Form′ at Park House aims to equip our young people with good study habits and the skills needed for the wider world. A brand new ′Sixth Form Centre′ provides a designated space, which allows the Year 12 and 13 students an area to study and relax.

AS/A Level Subjects offered include:

Applied Computing
Art
Biology
Business Studies
Chemistry
Economics
English Literature
Geography
History
Mathematics
Physical Education (AS Only)
Physics

Admissions Procedure

Children are expected to have a good command of the English language as the school follows the English National Curriculum. All children will be required to submit to our assessment procedures prior to being offered a place at Park House.

All children are welcome to apply but Park House gives priority to first language English speakers as well as siblings but this does not guarantee entrance.

Applications can only be submitted on-line and must be completed in full. Once completed applications have been received parents will receive an email from our Admissions Office.

Park House does not operate a waiting list but rather a waiting pool. When a place comes available in the school, all candidates in the pool are considered before being invited for assessment.
Secondary School – Years 7-13

All children applying for the Secondary School will be required to take a test in Mathematics and English. Children from Park House Primary School will be given priority.

While the school year starts in September we do accept children throughout the school year depending on the availability of seats. Admission in to Year 10 is not normally possible after December, as a considerable amount of examination work will have been completed in the first term.

Children applying for Year 12 should have achieved a minimum of 5 Cs at IGCSE and have Bs or above in their chosen AS/A2 subjects.
