The Scares of Social Networking Sites

As a parent, you are most probably aware that your child probably occupies a Facebook and/or a Twitter account, but un-aware of the precautions of the sites.

facebook dangers for teensYes, Facebook/Twitter and other social media sites provide a secure place to connect with people across the world and share photos etc, but what the public needs to be aware of is the dangers of these simple acts.

Posting a photo onto Facebook even when deleting it, places the photo on the Internet forever, not being able to remove it, forever, there will be a record of that photo somewhere on a internet browser. Posting a photo without adjusting the privacy settings can attract unwanted attention, which can transfer you into a fearsome world.

Underestimating the actions of some individuals on the Internet is highly common, as we don’t understand what the motives are. This is not to discourage you to use the highly- well-formed social media sites, but to only inform you of some of the dangers.

You may be familiar with the social media site ‘Twitter’, allowing people to ‘tweet’ their latest thoughts and send it out into a social network that contains a complete list of their followers. The social networking site contains several hundred million online users, a huge capacity of these users are well known celebrities, who are often complaining about the ‘press’ and ‘paparazzi’ following their every move, the main reason for this is, the un-gated walls of their twitter page, making it so easy for anyone to follow a celebrity as they ‘tweet’ about their daily routines and what’s on their agenda. This demonstrates how open your personal messages are to the public, that anyone can view it as there are no restrictions of becoming a follower on someone’s Twitter page- unlike on ‘Facebook’ where you have to ‘request’ to be someone’s ‘friend’.

Like all social networking sites, ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ have their own personal dangers, but that doesn’t deny the fact of what brilliant networks they are, allowing us to connect with friends and family in different country’s and to create our own personal profiles where we can share our photos and feelings, just remember what you post on the internet, can be viewed by virtually anyone, take a second to adjust your privacy settings, its not that hard and it will benefit you more than anyone else. Ensure that your children are aware of this, and encourage them to enlighten their friends to do the same.
