I highly recommend Reef Island. It's at the Sea Front Manama near Seef. Apartment living available currently, they're still working on the villas. We love it there. Not too busy and close enough to Bahrain City Centre to make it worthwhile. There are plans for a shopping centre and hotel (I think they're still intending to construct them). There are a couple of good restaurants, coffee shops and an ice creamery. My husband commutes to Khobar daily and we decided we didn't want to be in a compound near the causeway for the very same reasons you mentioned. It's an extra 15-20 mins on the commute, but he says it is so worth it to come home to the island and me, of course! We're not into nightclubs but enjoy restaurants. Reef Island is particularly pleasant as you can walk around the waterfront on the promenade. There is still construction ongoing but it does not impact on the lifestyle. Checkout Bahrain Property World or propertyfinderbh and you'll see what is on offer. Good luck and cheers edited by Nu2Bahrain on 18/02/2014

After 9years in Asia we will be heading to Bahrain in June. My daughter is going to Uni so will only be me and the hubby 90% of the time, i am just wondering if anyone could give us advice on where to live. My husband will be working in Saudi and using the causeway everyday amd Saar has been recomended..since we don't have kids and don't really want to live in a compound with lots of kiddies we were thinking about a gated community, any suggestions? Would anyone recommend another area? Very grateful for any help.. Cheers Mary
