hi all,
I just had a miscarriage 2 days ago. I was 5 weeks pregnant. I have visited 2 different doctors at Burjeel hospital and Al Noor hospital. Both doctors recommend me to do the dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure. Has anyone did this procedure in Abu Dhabi or Dubai hospital? Do you have any good doctor to recommend?
Iam very scared so any help or advice will be so appreciated.
Thank you.
Keiko

I had a D&C last Sunday after waiting 2 weeks and nothing was happening. I did it with Dr Saoussen in Healthcare city - she is a French doctor and she is very reliable and competent. It went as well as something like that could and she followed up with me and everything. I believe she is out of the country this week but should be back next week. Good luck, it's never easy.

I miscarried at 20 weeks, the fetus measured at 16 weeks however I'd had a scan at 17 weeks were everything was fine. Cytotec for miscarriages was removed from private hospitals by the Ministry of Health a couple of weeks before I miscarried and is only available at Latifa or Dubai Hospitals. I was told on the Sunday that there was no heartbeat and by the Tuesday night I had delivered her at home as the hospital wouldn't admit me as I wasn't in labour. I ended up bleeding out and having to have a D&C anyway as the placenta was stuck and they couldn't stop the bleeding.

I was diagnosed last week with a missed abortion at 10 weeks, the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks. Ive been waiting a few days (no bleeding or cramping yet) and intend to wait at the least the full week suggested by the obgyn, but does anyone know a hospital here in Dubai that will administer the oral medication to induce the abortion as opposed to the suppository??? Ive read the oral is more effective. But its like pulling teeth trying to get any answers from the hospitals here. Thanks in advance! the oral medication is cytotec the same one that is administered internally. For me none worked and I had to go for a D&C. Check with Latifa hospital, not all private hospitals have cytotec as it is a restricted medication. Sorry for your loss xx

I have had a natural miscarriage and a D&C, I would take the natural anyday as I almost died under anaesthetic due to the poor anaethetist :-( This was at City Hospital. Worst experience of my life.

2013 i had a miscarriage and was rushed to the ER of American Hospital. I was 8 weeks then and the medical staff there were very helpful. I was not bleeding much but the doctor strongly advised me to go the natural way of letting my body expel the remnants of the pregnancy out instead of D&C. After 7 hours of observation and ultrasound to check my uterus was already clear, I was given some meds and went home to recover. Back to my country of origin, most doctors advise immediately D&C but here in Dubai i experienced differently. It was good that the doctor who attended to me at American Hospital advised me the natural way and after some time, I got pregnant and carried a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Hi ladies, I am sorry to read everything you are all went through. I am currently 8 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Unfortunately, the embryo development stopped after 6 weeks and a half, but the rest continued to develop. My bhcg was 2 days ago more than 40000. The heart never beat. My gynecologist confirmed me after 3 ultrasounds (made from january 9 to 19) it was over. She adviced me a private hospital to get the abortive medicine and avoid the D and C procedure. Unfortunately (I live in Abu Dhabi) we find it only in public hospitals (Mafraq and Corniche that is more for the locals). So we scheduled a D and C for tuesday in the private hospital. The gyne told me "Try Mafraq hospital, sure they will give you the medicine, take an ultrasound with you, they will make another one and after comparison, there will not be any doubt. After that you can cancel the D and C with me". I went, and they absolutely refused to give it to me. I will not talk about the gynecologist I met there again (I posted a thread about that in Abu Dhabi forum)... She confirmed the pregnancy stopped 2 weeks before. She let me leaving with my dead embryo in the belly proposing me to wait one more week. I have absolutely no pain, no bleedings so I am looking forward tuesday as this nightmare ends. It will be my second miscarriage in 4 months, but thanks God my husband and I already have a wonderful 17 month - old daughter. Take care ladies, good luck and many healthy babies to come...

hi. i had a miscarriage too 1 month ago. i started bleeding then i went to my dr she confirmed that the heart beat is stopped . it was very difficult for me but it happened, then she asked for D&C and i was in shock so i accepted so i had to go to hospital next day to do . when i came home at night i consulted with 2 doctors and they both told me you shouldn't go for D&C as i was only 7 weeks and D&C has many side effects, they were shocked that my dr asked me for that . so i called my dr and cancelled. after 2 days i started cramping and after a heavy pain i miscarried naturally. after 1 week i went for sono in another dr and she confirmed miscarried completely. i think you should wait till it happens naturally if not then you can go for D&C. i hope everything goes fine with you . i know how much painful is the lose. my prayers with you.

Sorry for your loss Keiko. I have just found out yesterday at my first scan that I have blighted ovum. I have to go back on Wednesday to do another scan and discuss my options. Unfortunately, I have no insurance cover for pregnancy and have been told that if I need hospital procedure it will cost 50,000 dh. Don't k ow whether to go home now incase this happens. I actually don't even have my passport as I was getting my visa done. I'll wait until Wednesday and discuss with doctor I suppose as I wouldn't have that money and don't want to land into debt here. I am currently 8 weeks but scan showed empty sac measuring 6 weeks 5 days. :-( That is not true, which hospital are you going to? At lateefa a D&C cost around 3000. I went for my 2nd D&C to Oriana hospital in Sharjah & I paid 8000. As for a blighted ovum it is not the same as a normal mc, my second miscarriage was a blighted ovum but the sac was growing and it's size reached almost 10 weeks at 12 weeks. Sorry for your loss xx

Walk, drink cinnamon tea or ginger, if you are not in pain, there is nothing to worry about. It is better to wait rather than going for unnecessary procedure. D&C is done under general anesthesia, you will have to do it in an OR, As I mentioned earlier I had 2 mcs & I was much further than you, but I wasn't rushed into the D&C until my body was ready and the cervix was soft and that was 2 weeks after the mc was confirmed both times. They are not suppose to go for the D&C before applying cytotec internally to soften the cervix. I was bleeding on & off. Give you body some time, at 5 weeks you might not bleed more than a regular period.

It is hard - particularly if you get conflicting advice. It is normal to stop bleeding at such an early stage it is usually more like a period. Usually remaining 'tissue' is reabsorbed - the baby/foetus is about the size so a sesame seed and you would not notice anything specific passing. You need to seek medical opinion urgently if you develop a very high temperature or start bleeding heavily - although both these are very unlikely. I am not sure what you are expecting to 'come out' - your last doctor is right just leave well alone and let your body settle. It may be up to six or eight weeks for your normal cycle to restart. Retained placenta at 5?weeks is very rare and so surgery isn't usually necessary.

First of all I would like to thank you Comp99, wickedangel_78 and Tessa21 for replying to my messages and your advice. Just to give you more background about my story. I was 5 weeks pregnant. Last Tuesday (12 Jan) I went to work. Suddenly I noticed bleeding. I left the office in a hurry to go to doctor. First I visited a doctor at Burjeel hospital who told me that I had a miscarriage and I need to do the D&C procedure. He made some blood tests and immediately he sent to the insurance the form to ask for approval for the D&C even though I told him I was not ready but he insisted to get the approval and he told me that I can cancel it later on. I agree with what comp99 mentioned, I felt that he was pushing me just to get his monthly quota of expenses etc. After that I wanted to get a second opinion and I went to Al Noor where I was also recommended the D&C procedure. Next day (13 Jan) I went to Corniche hospital where I did for the first time a very detailed scan. The doctor there told me that the tissue is very close to my cervix and that I should wait at least one week. The problem is that starting today (14 Jan) I stop having bleeding so iam not so sure if it can really come out naturally. On top of that Iam not sure which doctor opinion to trust since iam not sure what is their agenda. Iam hoping in the next days things nature will take its course and help me. Iam not sure how much more pressure i can handle. thank you all for your kind advice and support

Excellent advice from everyone. I should add they do rush d&c here as its covered by insurance. After my hospital stay my doctor waited for another week for my cervix to clear out naturally. If it hadn't probably I would have been advised for a d&c. If you are already bleeding definitely go for medical management first and your doctor should give it some time to clear out on its own. 5 weeks is very early.

Wickedangel is right. I would be tempted to ask the doctors why they are suggesting a D and C rather than allowing nature to take its course. In UK guidance from Royal College is that you should wait for natural completion of miscarriage and do a pregnancy test 3 weeks afterwards. If there is continued bleeding then something like misoprostol is prescribed and it causes completion. Rarely would there be surgical intervention at this stage of pregnancy and that would be vacuum aspiration not D and C. It would be good to understand why they are suggesting this - if you are two days post loss and not bleeding heavily there is often no need for any intervention. Many women at 5 weeks don't even know they are pregnant and something like a quarter to a third of all pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Are you bleeding? I'd go for medical management 1st before considering D&C 5 weeks is a very early miscarriage, I had 2 missed miscarriages, both times I was advised to go for tablets 1st to initiate the miscarriage before going for a D&C , in both times I was 12 weeks but baby measuring 10 weeks. But I don't misscarry naturally & had to go for D&Cs both times My cousin went to lateefa hospital, she miscarried at 5 weeks & she was bleeding , at the hospital they gave her the tablets & monitored her, she passed it naturally without the need for a D&C Eta: both times i waited 2 weeks after the mc was confirmed, it is still too early for you to go for D&C , I'm surprised they are rushing you to go for a D&C, a D&C can cause tightening in the cervix & scarring , they have to wait until the cervix is short & soft and dilating either naturally or by using tablets. Good luck & sorry for your loss xx

I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks about which I found out only at 9 weeks after some spotting. That's when I rushed to a doctor, she did a scan and booked me for a d&c two days later but I never got to that as it happened naturally same day in evening and they admitted me over night in medcare hospital for observation and medicines. I hope you are ok. Just sharing my story to let you know it can happen naturally also or through d&c. I recieved good care in medcare hospital jumeirah. I hope someone else come forward to answer your question about d&c. It's a scary time but it will pass. Have strength and take care of yourself.
