My maid needs to get her appendix taken out. Iranian just told my husband is will cost 7-8k. His colleague told him he should take her to Rashid Hospital as emergency, and it will be done for free. Is this correct? Anything else we should know? Any other hospital that would be better? Even if we pay.

Yes DH will have to pay for the operation, and it will cost us around 7k (she's just coming out of the operation now so not sure). But the care she got at Rashid was excellent, and they were so thorough. They redid all the tests hence why she is only finishing the op now (policy) but because it is an emergency situation we will not pay for the tests. All in all it is costing us the same as if we had stayed at the Iranian, but even the maid was happy we'd moved her after she saw the level of care and skill of Rashid H. BM, apparently the price list you linked below is old prices, before the financial crisis. Since then they have stopped free procedures for expats and put up their prices for the non-free procedures. Now I just wish this "thanksgiving" didn't involve DH being at the hospital for almost 24hours and me home with 2 sick babies. I am reminded to be greatful to having a husband who usually helps with the snotty noses and a maid who takes care of my children like they are her own. Now to go sleep before I have to wake up in 1 or 2 hours.:\:

Surely appendix removal is an emergency if it bursts the consequences could be fatal? Can you not just go to A&E with her and say she has appendicitis? Hope she is ok. X Thats sort of what i was getting at the maids health is at risk so best just to get it done surely i think 7000 quoted is a reasonable amount for major operation? If she has already had tests done at 1 place then goes to rashid where the op will cost maybe 5000 plus cost of additional tests probably best just to stick with where you have been and get it done ASAP? Even in an emergency situation, you still have to pay/or get the approval from insurance before they will operate. And even with a definitive diagnosis prior to getting to a hospital, they will still run and re run any previous tests done at huge cost to reach their own conclusion re: diagnosis. (At least, this is the case at the 'private' hospitals we have been to here)

Rashid Hospital is really for emergencies You can find the full list of surgical procedures & their costs on this link (Dubai Hospital, the government hospital that is not emergency) http://web.dohms.gov.ae/dh/Health%20Fees/Surgical%20Services.pdf [i'>Hind quarter amputation[/i'> :\::\:

I recently looked into private health insurance for maids - it isn't that expensive (AED2000 per year upwards), I am surprised it is not obligatory here or not advertised/sold more agressively at least. CP is right. It would be nice to know about health insurance options for maids.

My friend has had experience with Rashid and honestly she thinks that it is one of the better hospitals in Dubai so I would not worry about the level of care there. Not sure if anyone else has the same opinion but I have heard many people give the same opinion, especially for emergencies!

Dubai Hospital charges 1100 dhs but Rashid charges 3500-5000 dhs, and more if complicated. Too bad for us...should have called up the hospitals but its been a crazy day. I just hope she gets quality service and she is fine and healthy when all done.

Had to step out..thanks all for your replies. My husband is now at Rashid and has finished registering the maid. Thanks BM for the link - looks like it would be around AED 1100. Or I am just not reading it all correctly. Anything under 7k is welcome. Cornish, I looked into private health insurance back when we first hired her. But it was much more expensive. At the time we got her the mandatory insurance at the time of residence visa, but noone asked for a renewal and we completely forgot about it:( Now I'm kicking myself in the behind not doing the minimum.... Thanks everyone:)

@dubaimaman Rashid hospital was free until about two months ago. Now there is a fee though very less compared to private hospitals. I have a friend whose maid had an appendix removed and it cost them, if I remember correctly around 5000 aed. HTH

I'm guessing your maid will need a current valid government health card, and you might need to be referred to Rashid by a government clinic. Best thing would be to speak directly to Rashid and ask them what the procedure is.
