Lulu sells the sheets of apricot paste. It is a terrific drink for Ramadan. They sell it year around.

I think in Geant I saw some kamardin syrup, it was also mixed with other fruits though. Has it helped you to feel less thirsty? Cos right now I am soooo thirsty. Alhamdulilah almost there... edited by Marroosh on 10/07/2013

The apricot drink is called kamardin. It is made with the orange flat pack ( apricot paste )in supermarket only sold in Ramadan .you nées to cut IT in small pièces. Add hot water and let it soak until it dissolves . When in a hurry I use the blender. Add sugar to taste and place in fridge. La nor used to sell the same in tetra pack a few years ago and then it dissapeared from the shelves

Ramadan Kareem to all, It's true you stop eating once Fagr Adhan started which can be seen on TV too especially Sharjah and Dubai channels. Hope you find blessing of this month already as the Taraweeh Prayer yesterday was just amazing with all the masjids calling for people to come and get this month's benefit. Sahoor is the meal or snack before Fajr Adhan so it varied last night but had beans, eggs and of course a glass of apricot drink which is believed to reduce thirst. We should arrange to have iftar sometimes and then go to Taraweeh too, let gather some thoughts on that? Oh I didn't know about apricot, what kind of drink is it?

Dates and water followed by a variety of dishes: Biryani, salouna and rice, baked fish, Mandy rice, baked mutton, baked chicken, fresh roti and steamed rice all with salads and various side dishes. I'm curious -- what is Mandy Rice?? (besides the British socialite, I mean!) I've seen it on menus but gotten a variety of different answers.

I went by Gulf News this morning too and Imsak was at 4.06am Fajr being 10 mins later. Yes some people follow the imsak but in reality fast starts when adhan is called. I follow the adhan not the imsak time, but then a lot of people do.

mrsb I don't hear adhan either unless the wind blows in my direction. But Gulf News has always been very accurate. I tried Islamic Finder but wasn't accurate either, it showed the same timing as yours. Al Ain is I think part of Abu Dhabi which shows as +4 minutes. Will try to listen for adhan tomorrow.

May I enquire as to what time Suhoor is usually eaten ie 5am (before sunrise)? Morning: Currently sunrise is around 5:30 and Fajr is 4:06. so, this morning I was up at 3am, cooking and reheating food then my family go up around 3:30 and we ate together, prayed, and then went back to sleep for a while. Evening: Maghrib is around 17:10 so I will cook before hand and have everything ready for when we hear Adhan. I hope this helps you. 4:06? Gulf News said 4:12. Where do you read the timings? You're in which Emirate? I am in Al Ain. I get the times for prayers from my iPad (if I can't hear a Masjeed around me) App is "Muslim Pro" - timing is set according to your location - I input Al Ain and this is the time I got. Unfortunately, I can't hear a Masjeed where my villa is located. Am I a few minutes early? I shall turn on Dubai One on the TV tomorrow morning and check. Thanks for that.

May I enquire as to what time Suhoor is usually eaten ie 5am (before sunrise)? That depends on when Fajr (prayer before sunrise is) when the adhan is called you have to stop eating. So it changes every day really. Check Gulf News prayer timings it will show you:) I usually wake up 30 minutes before fajr so I can take my time. Thanks :) Certainly going to make the Um Ali recipe tonight!!

Ginnee Umm Ali recipe sounds delicious, this is my 1st ever Ramadan and my past ignorance on your religion shames me, I am finding the whole thing fascinating and I am so enjoying the whole journey, the build up, the tradition and the respect! I am also looking forward to my 1st Iftar, but I will try this recipe myself! Forgive me but ' suhoor' is this breakfast'? Ramadan Kareem. Suhoor is the meal we have before we start out fast. I had a big bowl of full fat yoghurt, muesli and a banana. Should keep me going for another 9 hours:) Enjoy your first iftar:)

Umm ali is a favourite during ramadan. I have a no-fail, easy recipe that literally takes 10 mins to prepare and 10 mins in a hot oven. 5 jumbo croissants Handful raisins Handful pistachios 750ml milk 250ml cream Can sweetened condensed milk 3rd cup rose water In a pot put milk, cream, condensed milk.bring to boil. Meanwhile tear croissants into pieces into an oven proof dish. Scatter nuts and raisins over top. Once milk mixture is boiling, add rose water. Pour over croissants. Put in hot oven till golden on top. I challenge you to taste nicer umm ali, really! You little gem ! I love eating Umm Ali and this recipe sounds simple and easy to prepare ! im on it .. thanks again !

Ramadan Kareem to you all :) These ideas all sound absolutely delicious!!! Suhoor at our house will be fairly simple porridge and fruit / labneh, bread & salad with fruit juices & tea. Iftar will be soup (whatever vegetables I have in the house) followed by salad & sambousek or fatayers. The main dish will salmon & potatoes/ fish in tahini sauce / meatballs / vine leaves & lamb / kabsa These websites had some quite nice ideas: http://www.nestle-family.com/my-ramadan/english/recipes.aspx http://allrecipes.com/recipes/holidays-and-events/ramadan/

Dates, Soup, Harees, Leqimat, mini prawn cocktails, sliders, samosas, creme caramel, Jello, and about 300 other random stuff (whatever anyone fancies). Suhour.....is a curry or biryani, but always something that has been in the slow cooker for hours, as nobody wants to cook after iftar!
