These little geckos are considered lucky by some - and I think they are really cute, love to hear them chirp! Good thing about them is they keep mosquitos under control.

They're really fantastic creatures. We have them running all over our house and they certainly keep the bugs away. I've got no bother with picking them up - being careful of their tails obviously, as their tails break off if you pick them up by them - it's an escape mechanism. They'll quite happily sit in the palm of your hand.

To be honest, since last night and after all these discussions, that little gecko has grown on me. =) He's out in the yard and I can even admit that I think he is cute. =D

There is a freakin cricket in mine, can't find it to get it out! Get a big gecko and let him find the cricket! lol, nothing worse than a noisy cricket hiding somewhere.

A couple months ago I had a bad ant problem in the kitchen. They were those teeny tiny brown ants that seem to live through a nuclear war and nothing gets rid of them. They were getting into DD's formula and were a big pain. A short time later a gecko got into our kitchen. I knew geckos are harmless and help keep the bugs away so I let him stay in the kitchen for a week and dealt with the poop on the walls b/c my ant problem was completely gone. After he polished off the ants I took a clear plastic bowl and put it on top of him and slid a piece of paper under the upside down bowl and carried him outside to the yard. It was a win win for both of us.

I'd end up trying to catch it with my own hands and let it out, lol but I've always been a big animal lover. There really aren't very many critters that I'm scared of except moths... they freak me out :(

Ok, update. Gecko has been removed safely and is happily playing and running around in our yard. DGIN - Only reason I wanted him out of the house is because I get really freaked out by the creepie crawlies... call it a phobia. I certainely did not want to hurt him as he is pretty harmless... Hubby just got him to climb on a piece of cardboard and then took him outside and let him run wild in the yard. More food out there for him anyway. So I am happy and I am sure the gecko is happy. :) Thanks too everyone who responded. :) You're an intelligent lady, overcome your fear with the power of knowledge that a small gecko is of no danger and is a house guest. Give me a gecko over a MIL any day, just think about it like that. edited by Domestic Goddess-in-training on 18/11/2011

The only way is to spray pif PAf on the gekho and pick him up with a vacuum cleaner .....the insecticide makes him dizzy and you can let him loose outside. Why on earth would anyone do that? Seriously i can not stay quiet on this! A gecko is completely harmless and does so much good, just leave it alone and be grateful your house is blessed.

Well, that's comforting. :) I wonder if we would succed if we use a large piece of paper and get him to climb on it and quickly take him outside. Hmmmm.... Might be too quick for that...

Oh no, there's no chance they will stay still long enough to be caught. We have adults, kids and dogs - none of whom have ever caught a gecko :)

Hmmmm... Well, I will stay put and watch him for now and hope that DH has a spark of genius... Just worried that my 8 month old DS would find him and attempt to put him in his mouth as he is at the stage where everything needs to be tasted first - him being teething and all. SIGH! Edited to say Thank you for all the info. :) Much appreciated. edited by marmarina on 18/11/2011

I'm no help as I just leave them be (but tut at the cr@p they leave on the wall) and laugh at my visitors who are scared of them. I don't know how you could move them without trying to herd them towards an open door but sod's law says that he or she will run in the opposite direction to the one you want them to.

He looks brown, seems pretty harmless, but if I want to move him without hurting him, which will be hubby's job, how do I do that? It says on the site that he is pretty fast....

These are the geckos that are common here [url=http://www.house-gecko.com/'>link[/url'> Be aware that they can be a pale (same colour as the paint on your wall) colour and maybe seem to have no markings at all - they can change their colour and markings to suit their surroundings.

How do I know if it's a gecko? It's kinda tiny and hasn't moved from it's spot. I don't want to hurt it, just want it out as I am just as scared of it as it is of me. :( Thanks! I will google that article. =)

Synthia - Egg shells? Really? How does that deter them? As soon as hubby gets rid of it whenever he eventually gets home, I have no problems cracking all my eggs and using the egg shells if that will keep them at bay. =D Trust me, they are very effective indeed. An article regarding this was published quite a while ago in 7 Days. Try looking it up on the internet if you're unsure... it mentions them being afraid of eggs, because of predator birds (or something along those lines).

If it's a gecko it will do its utmost to stay out of your way as it will be terrified of you. They also eat mosquitoes...
