No wonder there are so many stressed out expats in Dubai. So many of you can't even handle how the general population of the region uses the English language? A language is only ever abused, IMO, when native speakers don't use it properly. This thread is just as bad as others like it that have been done before, as it is descending into picking out words that are used colloquially by second and third language users. Sat on my hands before when such threads appeared, not doing it anymore. The thread is about "what word annoys you"....not necessarily "in Dubai".....;) Go through the thread again. ahnn..no? :P :)

Totally agree with tkoshy, anyway I have a word that scares me when it is not used in its beautiful religious meaning (which I fully understand since we have and use the equivalent Italian expression a lot), and it is "Inshallah". When it is used in professional environments, for example when defining milestones or fixing appointments and it implies that the person I am talking to might not take the engagement seriously.

Nic_R replied : Also I hate when someone asks 'what is your good name' - I know it is supposed to be a polite way of asking but it just makes no sense!! I actually think that is quite cute! ;) I hate it when people call me sweetie, daaaaaaling, babe, specially if I don't know them that well! Oh and heart used as a verb. As in "I heart Dubai" edited by Swiss Sandy on 03/11/2011

good name[/b'>' - I know it is supposed to be a polite way of asking but it just makes no sense!! I just think of it as a culturally appropriate alternative to 'Christian name'. Not annoying, just one of those ESL things. They could say 'given name' I suppose... edited by Green-ish on 03/11/2011

Mine are not just one word but I can't bear it when someone (even people who I may not know that well) tell me that something is 'repeating on them' - it is absolutely revolting, why would I want to know that they are doing smelly burps?! I don't even like it when people I am close to say it, I really don't want to know. Or when they tell me they are 'bloated'. No need. Also I hate when someone asks 'what is your good name' - I know it is supposed to be a polite way of asking but it just makes no sense!!

Literally, all the time and stuff. As in: I literally died last night. I talk to my Mum all the time. I couldn't come to your party because I had stuff to do. O and Synergy... what a stupid word!!

When sales staff say "for a while", instead of asking me to wait for a minute or two. "do you have this T-shirt in blue?" "for a while maaaaam" Isn't this more of a language issue? It might be. Is this better: FOR A WHILE strung together

Inshallah Beautiful word ... but when you say "Inshallah I would meet you at 3:00 pm", "Inshallah your tap would stop leaking" it just annoys the **** out of me. Grrrrr Same. Also "Madam" and "Babe"

Chill or Chillax or the like when used in response to someone's genuinely difficult situation. For example, when I was trying to get out of a mad, abusive, empty marriage and hit roadblocks that meant further delays or possibly the divorce not coming thru and a good friend's response would be 'Chill'

let's see, specific to Dubai, the most annoying abuse of the English language ever: -do the needful -the same, the same, the same (till you turn blue in the face) -the same the above (a variation on the same theme) -to intimate something -abusing 'the' -abusing apostrophe 's
