Hi everyone - I've put myself in a sticky situation of anger and guilt... Anger over the fact my new(ish) mop handle and a few coasters have been broken, and guilt over the thought that if I do complain about the maid to her company she's going to get penalised

What to do... What do you do when a maid damages your belongings? Accidentally or not.

Well put. Human error is a fact. What following action is needed, depends on circumstances and person involved.

Depends... if the mop was super expensive, then sure complain. But if it's a bog standard one you can get from any carrefour or ace then don't bother - i'm sure you can afford another one quite easily without having to risk the maid being penalised for what is most like a mistake. Saying that I have been in situations before where they've broken something and not informed me about it, only for me to notice after.... if that happens then yes, i get annoyed and complain. More because of the lack of honesty of damaging someone's property than the fact the item is broken. But i guess thats a risk we take if we hire home help
