When it comes to man-made waterways, Dubai knows exactly what it's doing. With Dubai Marina already secured in the emirate's portfolio, it's looking like the new Dubai Canal will take first place in impressiveness, scale and general amazing-ness.

It's a development that has been hard to ignore over months gone by, as Dubai's most central highway Sheikh Zayed Road was transformed to make way for the Dubai Canal... And it's certainly set to be a beautiful addition to the landscape of the city.

In fact, this huge 3.2 kilometre canal that links Business bay and Ras Al Khor to the Arabian Gulf has turned areas like Satwa, Downtown, Zabeel, Karama, Bur Dubai and Oud Metha into one huge island, which is now competely waterlocked. By the end of 2016, all major roads and pedestrian bridges will be open and fully-functioning, and hotel and retail outlets will continue construction.

Here's a selection of photos to show you what it currently looks like, plus how it will look... Which we've very excited for!

The images above and below show the main bridges and pedestrian crossings completed.

There's no denying it's an impressive project that will easily add to Dubai's unrecognisable portfolio of awe-inspiring projects.

And let's not forget the waterfall that is now attached to Sheikh Zayed Road...

But what is the Dubai Canal?
The Dubai Water Canal project is an extension of Deira Creek, linking the area of Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf. Unveiled in October 2013, the project has been underway for over three years and flows through Safa Park and Jumeirah.

The canal itself is three-kilometres in length, and the entire project also includes a new shopping mall - with a park on the roof, might we add - four hotels, 450 restaurants, luxury housing, walkways and cycle paths to enjoy. The new area will measure up to 80,000 square metres, leaving space for public places and facilities, as well as private marinas for boats and a new trade centre at the entrance of the canal... Which all sounds very fancy!

And. That's. Not. All. Seriously! There's also plans to extend Jumeirah's beach, once again changing Dubai's shoreline... Which we're sure will be a fantastic spot to bask in the desert sun, and will no doubt be a huge hit during the cooler months in the emirate.

Here's a selection of images that show the projected final results:
