In addition to treating lips that patients consider to be too small, lip enhancement is also performed to improve thin or flat lips, lips that appear too fat, or where there is no bottom lip. It can also be used to correct lopsided lips or where the lips or cupid's bow are poorly defined.
In circumstances where the lips are too large or asymmetrical a lip lift surgery may be needed. Large lips may also benefit from liposuction treatment. However such more radical options are usually permanent as the structure of the lips is drastically altered, and in the majority of cases simple non-surgical enhancement using dermal fillers is all that is required.
To find out how lip enhancement works we spoke to Dr Allen Rezai, Lead Consultant Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Elite Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Group and specialist facial surgeon experienced in both surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation treatments. According to Dr Rezai, the lip edges can be treated to restore youthful contours and redefine the borders of the lips, which also helps prevent lipstick from seeping out into the skin. This leaves patients with a crisp, well-defined shape.

Fillers were originally made from collagen or silicone. But according to Dr Rezai “These are now very outdated! The advanced fillers we use are made from Hyaluronic acid which is a substance occurring naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid helps maintain structure and thickness of the skin but it will be depleted slowly through the ageing process. Thus these advanced dermal fillers are not permanent and will naturally break down. Depending on the area treated and the individual patient, the effects will last anywhere from 3 to 9 months.”
As to how the treatment is carried out, Dr Rezai explains that “for purposes of comfort, an anaesthetic cream will be applied prior to the procedure. Some of the advanced dermal filler themselves also contain a local anaesthetic for added comfort and is injected with a small, fine needle. At consultation, a patient's precise requirements will be discussed to ensure that the treatment is tailored to the desired outcome. However, in general the treatment usually takes from 20 to 30 minutes depending upon the extent of the areas to be treated.”
Of course every patient is keen to see the results of their treatment as quickly as possible and fortunately, according to Dr Rezai, the effect is immediate, with virtually no recovery time needed, patients being able to carry on with their normal routines immediately following their appointment.
Dr Rezai explains that “in some patients lip fillers can last up to 9 months, whereas in others they might last no more than 3 to 6 months. However, the effects improve with every treatment. During the consultation the patient will be advised of which filler is most suitable in her case,” says Dr Rezai. “There are softer fillers that give a more defined and sharper look but break down quicker than thicker and firmer fillers that result in a plumper look and can last much longer. Other factors such as age and smoking also play a big part in determining the life of dermal fillers. But generally speaking the results will improve and last longer with subsequent treatments.”
According to Dr Rezai, it is common to have some redness and swelling immediately following the treatment, but this usually resolves within a few days.
