Liposuction may be performed alone or in combination with other types of body contouring procedures, it is an effective solution for Body Sculpting but Dr Rezai, is keen to point out that “Patients considering Liposuction should have realistic expectations, and it is important to understand that Liposuction is definitely not a method for weight loss or treatment for obesity. Liposuction will remove fat selectively from certain areas, but over time your body will naturally accumulate new fat in other areas. It is, therefore, no substitute for a medically sound weight loss regime involving diet and exercise. Nevertheless in many cases Liposuction may be the only way to eliminate fatty deposits from certain areas of the body.”
Before we go into details about Lipo, let’s take a brief look at the problem itself – Fat.
Fat is an efficient way for our body to store energy. The basic unit of fatty tissue is the fat cell; technically known as an adipocyte. This simple form of cell consists of a (membrane) bag within which sits the nucleus of the cell surrounded by fat. Throughout our childhood and into early adolescence, we continue to develop more and more fat cells. However, by our late teens to mid-twenties it is believed that we stop making new fat cells.

The answer, is unfortunately, very simple. We just increase the amount of fat stored in each of these fat cells. They simply balloon, sometimes to many thousands of times their original size.
If we take a very simplistic view of an area of the body, then one might imagine the skin, with subcutaneous fat on the inside, with muscles and other structures underneath. As weight is put on, the fat cells increase in size, with the result that the area becomes generally larger. For a lot of people losing weight, toning up and achieving the figure they want requires a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise. However, certain individuals have collections of fat in specific anatomical areas and when these individuals put on weight, they feel that it has become localised to these areas and usually no amount of exercise or dieting can shift these stubborn fat pockets and liposuction may be the only solution.
Typical problem areas that can be treated with liposuction include but are not limited to arms, chest, stomach, flanks, inner and outer thighs, hips, buttocks, knees and chin.
According to Dr Rezai “the ideal candidates for Liposuction are adults in good general health, not over-weight, have elastic skin and good muscle tone. People considering Liposuction should be non-smokers with no serious pre-existing medical conditions that would hinder a proper recovery following the procedure. There is however, also a non-surgical solution for body contouring which uses radiofrequency and ultrasound energies for fat removal and skin tightening. This non-invasive method may be preferable for individuals who are not ready to undergo surgery or have only a small amount of fatty deposits, either way a thorough consultation with an experienced and qualified practitioner is essential in order to determine the person’s suitability for any type of treatment.”
Dr Rezai goes on to explain that: “There are a number of Liposuction techniques available, the most common one being the “Wet” or “Tumescent” Liposuction, during which a mixture of salty water and local anaesthetic solution is injected into the fatty area being treated prior to the actual suction-assisted fat removal. This makes it easier to remove the fat and helps to reduce pain, bleeding and swelling after the operation. This traditional liposuction technique is still the most effective method for removal of larger fatty deposits.”
“Liposuction can produce considerable benefits which last exceptionally well. One of the main benefits is that of a patient's renewed self-image and boosted confidence. Furthermore, the result is permanent, since the removed fat cells will not regenerate. By maintaining a sensible lifestyle, and preferably also by exercising, the patient will be helping to both maintain and even improve the result of their surgery.”
