Which Type of Chemical/Skin Peel is Right for You?

Imagine what it would be like to simply peel off everything unappealing about your complexion — acne scars, injury scars, sun damage, fine lines and hyperpigmentation or simply just bring the radiance back your Skin!

Chemical peels are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures patients ask for. It works by producing controlled injury to the skin, which promote growth of new skin and improved appearance. It can give your skin a healthy, "just refreshed" look, or can be tailored, taking years off of your appearance.

Chemical Peels are known to have been used as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans created peels with different ingredients like mustard, milks, or wines to develop their own peel treatments. Today the choice is much easier, and ingredients are much more advanced.

Typically, there are three main types of peels, Superficial peels, Medium depth peels and Deep peels.

Superficial Peels

SUPERFICIAL PEELS – are the “Refreshing” forms of Skin Peels and often referred to as “Lunch-time Peels”.

What they do - Penetrate ONLY the “Epidermis”, outer layer of the skin, to gently remove dead skin cells, encouraging cell turnover.

May contain these active ingredients, alone or in combination:

  • AHA – Alpha Hydroxy Acids are naturally occurring acids derived from plant sugars. Some of the most popular acids in this group are: Glycolic acid, Salicylic acid, Mandelic acid, Lactic acid
  • Light TCA - Tricloracetic Acid (10%-20%)

Treatment area & Benefits: Can be used on Face & Body
Superficial peels refresh the complexion and can give skin a nice “glow”, but results are temporary They are great for improving the appearance of sun-damaged skin, acne-prone skin, and enlarged pores, especially before big events.

Medium Peels

What they do - Penetrate the “Epidermis”, outer layer of skin, and the upper layer of the “Dermis”, middle layer of skin, to remove damaged skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and collagen production.

May contain these active ingredients, alone or in combination:

  • TCA - Tricloracetic Acid (35%-50%)
  • Kojic Acid originally found in mushrooms but nowadays also noted in soy, rice and other grains.
  • Glycolic Acid 70% +

Treatment area & Benefits: Can be used on Face & Body
Medium peels tend to tackle common skin issues such as reducing fine lines and wrinkles, reducing hyperpigmentation, sun spots and freckles, and controlling acne while improving the appearance of acne scars. Varying strengths are used to adjust the depth of the peel, depending on what complexion concerns you have.

Deep Peels

What they do - Reach deep into the “Dermis”, middle layer of the skin, and remove damaged skin cells encouraging cell turnover and collage production.

May contain these active ingredients, alone or in combination:

  • Phenol
  • TCA - Tricloracetic Acid (75% & higher)

Treatment area & Benefits: Normally used only on Face
Deep Peels with phenol as active ingredient achieve the most dramatic results but is not a simple procedure and is performed under general anaesthetic which requires presence of an anaesthesiologist.

Some skin complexions require just superficial treatment, while others require deeper penetration. But all Skin Peel Treatments have one common goal; to slough off the top layer of damaged skin, revealing newer, more refreshed and youthful skin.

The results of Chemical Peel treatment depend on the condition of the skin, the type of peel and the application of the peel solution. Depending on the severity of the skin condition, many times, especially with superficial and medium peels, a course of treatment is required to achieve the desired outcome. And sometimes the skin has to be prepared by using specific creams or skincare program, few weeks prior to the actual Peel treatment.

A chemical peel can make the skin appear dramatically younger, especially if done in a series of 2 – 4 treatments using proper home care product in between peels. As with any other cosmetic procedure, it is important to have a thorough consultation with a specialist to discuss your concerns, assess your skin, check for contraindications, determine your suitability for a Chemical Peel / Skin Peel treatment and have a bespoke treatment plan made to address your specific Skin Concerns in the most effective way possible.

Remember, the aim is to be as gentle enough as possible and only do treatments that are as strong as necessary to tackle your complexion problems.

THE PERFECT PEEL® - 5-acid blended medium peel with Glutathione, vitamins and minerals
The Perfect Peel blends glutathione, kojic acid, TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and a blend of minerals and vitamins, including vitamin C.

Glutathione is the ultimate antioxidant, penetrating deep into the cellular level of the skin to fight oxidant damage and is the anti-ageing answer to premature wrinkling. Our bodies naturally produce glutathione but as we age, our levels deplete due to sun exposure, air pollutants, environmental stress and the ageing process itself. Glutathione is also proven to reverse melanin’s metabolism, lightening dark pigmentations.

Kojic acid is a powerful lightening agent and proven to increase collagen and elastin production, resulting in skin that is brighter and tighter.

TCA, phenol and retinoic acid reduce wrinkles and correct pigment problems, while salicylic acid exfoliates the skin and reduces inflammation. Alone the ingredients are powerful, but in combination they produce results that are astonishing.

With The Perfect Peel, you are given an individual home treatment pack. This pack contains retinol wipes and a vitamin C moisturiser to assist the peeling process and enhance your results.

DERMACEUTIC COSMO PEEL – Advanced Rejuvenation Peel. The Cosmo Peel is an adaptable superficial to medium TCA Peel, designed to improve the texture and luminescence of your skin, delivering dramatic results with minimal social downtime. It improves the appearance of acne, dark spots and pigmentation, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and leaves the skin soft and glowing.

OBAGI® BLUE PEEL - Is a TCA based peel mixed with a special blue base to ensure an even uniform distribution and to allows the practitioner to regulate the depth of the peel. This rejuvenation treatment helps eliminate blemishes, acne scars, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and sun damage whilst increasing overall texture and tightness.

DERMACEUTIC MASK PEEL - a calming, clay-based, very superficial and gentle peel that treats common skin conditions such as acne, excess sebum, dilated pores, and texture irregularities. The Mask Peel is mainly suitable for oily, acne prone skin types, and is an excellent introduction to peels for patients with irritated and congested skin.

SKINCEUTICALS PIGMENT BALANCING PEEL - is a stronger Superficial Peel that combines brightening and anti-inflammatory agents with a peeling solution. Perfect for those who have uneven skin tone, sun damaged skin, melasma or acne scar discoloration.

SKINCEUTICALS GEL PEEL - If you have never had a chemical peel or if you have very sensitive skin, this light superficial SkinCeuticals Gel peel is ideal for you. It gives the skin a brighter appearance with diminished sun damage and a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. SkinCeuticals Gel Peels are also an excellent adjunct to Laser and RF facial treatments; and are also ideal for `prepping` the skin prior to a more invasive peel.

Chemical peels, especially, medical grade peels, are not suitable for home use. There are many steps that go into chemical peel treatments and many factors are taken into consideration. Patient’s medical history is thoroughly reviewed for possible contraindications, the skin type and concerns are assessed before a suitable, single or a course of peel treatment is recommended. Another important factor is that the skin needs to be cared for properly before, during and after the procedure and depending on the strength of the peel and the severity of the skin condition, there are specific care instructions that should be carefully followed.
