When it comes to your oral hygiene, do you know just how much your toothbrush can impact your health? Experts from ConfiDent Dubai Palm explain...

It is well known that oral hygiene is the key element to keep the teeth healthy, and to maintain safe dental treatments... So, here is our question – Do you really know which toothbrush is the best and the safest one for you?

As part of her master`s dissertation, Dr. Nicolle our Brazilian Dentist has recently published a systematic review that brought out the question of which are the characteristics in a toothbrush to consider it safe to use and effective for dental plaque removal.

The conclusion of Dr. Nicolle`s study was that soft and extra-soft toothbrushes, with both rounded and tapered bristles, are considered to be safe and effective. Medium and hard toothbrushes are not recommended, given that they were linked to adverse oral soft tissue effects, such as gingival abrasion.

ConfiDent Palm Dentists recommend daily oral hygiene consisting of brushing your teeth at least 2 times per day, floss every day and use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush to avoid oral soft tissues injuries during toothbrushing.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, excellent results with respect to clean your mouth can be achieved with both electric and manual toothbrush. Dr Irina Bratu is sharing some pros and cons that will help you with your choice:

Manual toothbrush

  • Some come with a tongue scraper

  • You have to do the work
  • Difficult for people with manual dexterity
  • No timer to tell you when 2 minutes are complete
  • Needs to be changed every 3 months

Electric toothbrush

  • Does the work for you
  • Come with variable speeds to help reduce the pressure on sensitive teeth
  • Some with build-in timer

  • Expensive
  • Require battery charging
  • The head needs to be replaced every 3 months
