With that celebrity smile on everyone’s mind, Porcelain Veneers have become one of the most sought after cosmetic dental procedures in the world.
Porcelain Veneers are wafer thin porcelain that are permanently bonded to the tooth, changing its shape, color and position in the mouth, to give you that stunningly beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.
Here’s our 13 Things to Need to Know About Veneers before you take the plunge.
1. Choose an Experienced Cosmetic Dentist
This is a serious cosmetic dental procedure, so you should invest your time to see a good cosmetic dentist after considering all the pros and cons.
Your first step to finding an amazing Cosmetic Dentist is checking out their work online to make sure they’re good at what they do. Look at their Before & After photos and patient testimonials.
At Dr. Joy Dental Clinic, we have some pretty amazing Cosmetic Dentists that you can work with:
2. There is No One Size Fits All
A smile that looks good on one person may not necessarily look good on you, and it’s this mentality that you need to understand and accept.
A skilled Cosmetic Dentist will look at your unique facial features and develop a blend of your desires along with proper aesthetics to ensure the you receive not only a proper fit, but a high-quality, customized smile suited perfectly to your face.
3. You Don’t Have to Do All Your Teeth
Do you only have a few teeth you want to change? Whether it’s a full mouth of veneers or just your front two teeth, there is no limitation to how many veneers you receive, other than your personal needs and budget. The artistry in placing veneers is to ensure that no matter your choice, everything fits perfectly together like a puzzle.
4. Veneers are an Aesthetic Procedure
Anyone who does not like the look of their teeth can benefit from veneers to fix their overall smile. Whether you have a gap in between your teeth, the color is less than favorable or you have chipped or broken teeth, porcelain veneers can fix any undesirable features and give you the natural smile you’ve always wanted.
5. Picking the Right Color
This is one of the most important points to think about because if you choose the wrong color for your skin tone or go too white, your brand-new smile may be less than optimal.
By nature, your teeth have either yellow or grey tones, so the trick is to find a color that not only matches your current teeth’s tone but also compliments your skins complexity.
When you start the process, temporary veneers are made to give you a lifelike blueprint of what you will receive with your permanent veneers. If you try the temporaries and do not like them, this is the time to make the change to find the perfect color for you!
6. Do Porcelain Veneers Hurt?
Before the procedure, you will be given localized anesthesia, as it could be a few hours application depending on the amount of veneers you are receiving. Regardless, we want our patients to be comfortable during their treatment as pain management is one of our highest priorities.
7. Tooth “Prep” Doesn’t Always Mean Shaving
There is a huge misconception that your teeth need to be shaved down to little stubs in order to receive veneers and this is just not the truth.
The majority of patients will only have 0.5 millimeters of their tooth enamel removed in order to have the porcelain wafer placed on top. If you have short or gapped teeth, the prep is minimal. The only time a Cosmetic Dentist really has to do a more difficult prep is if the patient comes in with highly crooked teeth and desires that perfect Hollywood Smile.
Our Dentists sometimes recommend having an Invisalign treatment for a short period of time just to align your teeth before going ahead with the veneers.
8. Direct Veneers or Porcelain Veneers
Direct veneers are made of composite and placed by the dentist over your teeth and can be completed in one appointment. Porcelain Veneers are made of ceramic and fabricated in the dental lab. Both are very different procedures so it’s good to know which one will suit you best. Speak to your Cosmetic Dentist about these two options.
9. Does the Dental Lab Matter?
Yes of course, preparation of your teeth for the veneers is done by the Cosmetic Dentist but that’s only half of the work. The porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental lab by dental technicians, which requires a high degree of skill and artistic flair by the technician to create stunning beautiful veneers.
At Dr. Joy Dental Clinic, we have our own dental lab with highly skilled ceramic technicians from Europe. Having an in-house lab allows our technicians to work closely with our Cosmetic Dentists and the patients to give them the exact smile that they desire.
10. Will My Teeth Get Sensitive?
A skilled Cosmetic Dentist will not remove more enamel than is necessary, which is 0.3 – 0.5 millimeter. Once the prep is done and temporary veneers are placed, you may experience some sensitivity, but this is transient and once the permanent teeth are bonded this sensitivity will disappear. Prolonged sensitivity is a sign that the dentist has either over prepped the teeth or has not cemented the veneers properly causing a leakage at the margins.
11. Lifelong Commitment
Porcelain Veneers may need to be replaced every 15-20 years if the gums recede as you age, which exposes the margins. Taking excellent care of your teeth by brushing twice and flossing once per day is essential to maintain the health of your teeth and the longevity of your veneers.
Don’t forget to also have a dental checkup and proper cleaning with a hygienist every 6 months!
12. Lifelong Investment
Just as they are a lifelong commitment, veneers are also a lifelong investment.
High quality Porcelain Veneers are not cheap and without proper maintenance, they will require replacement sooner than later. If you have difficulty paying for your veneers upfront, you’re not alone. Request a 0% interest installment plan from our Dr. Joy Dental Clinics and we will be happy to give it to you!
13. Precautions with Veneers
Just like natural teeth, Porcelain Veneers can also crack if you bite into hard substances or grind your teeth at night. It is advisable to wear a night guard to protect your veneers if you believe you grind your teeth.
At Dr. Joy Dental Clinic, we offer a wide range of Cosmetic Dentistry procedures that includes Full Smile Makeovers with Porcelain Veneers, giving you a stunning smile to enhance the aesthetics of your facial features. We also offer convenient payment plans with 0% interest.
