The Pros and Cons of Lingual Braces

They're also known as invisible braces and come with their own pros and cons about whether they suit your needs

Invisible braces or Lingual braces are essentially the same as the traditional fixed braces except they are fitted behind your teeth.

While most consider these invisible braces to be a relatively new innovation, they were actually invented in the 1970s from two orthodontists in Japan and the United States.

Of course, their initial design made them very unsightly, being bulky and not that great at straightening teeth, but over the years their technology has advanced, making them the most discreet braces option and providing excellent results.

What are the advantages of lingual braces?

If hidden braces couldn’t get better, here’s a few reasons why we believe Lingual Braces may be a great fit for you.

1. They are practically invisible

Seeing as they are securely placed behind your teeth, nobody will be able to see any metal wires or brackets in plain sight. Some of our patients can go their entire treatment without friends or family noticing their braces!

2. They are no hassle

Because lingual braces are fixed to the back of your teeth, they remain in place throughout the entire treatment. This means no hassle! Lingual braces are always straightening your teeth day and night, meaning you don’t need to remember to put them on. Another benefit is that you can’t lose them, as some patients agree, putting in and taking aligners out to eat is too much of a headache.

3. They suit all orthodontic cases

With the latest innovations, like Lingual Braces, we can treat mild to complex orthodontic complaints. They are perfect for severely crowded teeth, spacing, and teeth that don’t bite together properly and work for even the mildest of cases for fixing a few teeth only. Lingual braces feature custom-made brackets perfectly fit your teeth, which provides excellent control and allows us to achieve precise, tailored movements.

What are the disadvantages of lingual braces?

If you're still unsure whether lingual braces are the best option for you, here are the disadvantages of having them...

1. They are a more expensive option

Lingual Braces are the most expensive braces option on the market because the cost of the brace itself is higher. Unlike traditional braces, the brackets are custom made for each patient and the wires are also pre-formed for patients from Germany, which increases the cost. Another reason they are more expensive is that orthodontists need to undergo specialised training to learn the technique and as they aren’t quite as accessible as traditional braces, adjustment appointments require more time.

2. They require extra effort

With this style of braces, you will need to pay more attention to brushing, flossing and overall better cleaning between your teeth. Adjustments will need to be made in the way you eat to avoid anything hard, chewy, crusty – essentially anything that could dislodge one of your brackets. If a bracket does come off, you will need to re-visit the orthodontist.

3. They can be uncomfortable

The inside of your mouth is not the most spacious place, so the addition of a brace can take some getting used to. During the first week, you will become accustomed to having the brace there, where there may be some soreness or irritation on your tongue, but by each passing day it will become more comfortable. You will receive a special wax to put on top of the brackets to relieve any areas that by become irritated or rub.
