Although diabetes affects men and women equally, women are more severely impacted by its consequences. Pre-menopausal women with diabetes lose the protections against heart disease that non-diabetic women have, and are 50 percent more likely to succumb to heart disease than men.

Yeast and Urinary Tract Infections
Many women will get a vaginal yeast infection at some point, but women with diabetes are at higher risk especially if their blood sugar levels are high.
More than 50% of women will get a urinary tract infection (UTI) in their lifetime, and your risk may be higher if you have diabetes. Some women have bladders that don’t empty all the way because of diabetes, creating a perfect environment for bacteria to grow.
To prevent yeast infections and UTIs, keep your blood sugar levels as close to your target range as possible. Other ways to prevent UTIs is to drink lots of water, wear cotton underwear, and urinate often instead of waiting until your bladder is full.
What are the different types of diabetes?
Type I diabetes
Also known as juvenile diabetes, this type occurs when the body fails to produce insulin. People with type I diabetes are insulin-dependent, which means they must take artificial insulin daily to stay healthy.
Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body uses insulin. While the body still makes insulin, unlike in type I, the cells in the body do not respond to it as effectively as they once did.
This is the most common type of diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and it has strong links with obesity.
Gestational diabetes:
This type occurs in women during pregnancy when the body can become less sensitive to insulin. Gestational diabetes does not occur in all women and usually resolves after giving birth.
Less common types of diabetes include monogenic diabetes and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes.
