When caught by authorities, any road and traffic offence in the UAE will always include a fine and, depending on the severity of the violation, additional black points to the vehicle owner and the car being retained by police.

The UAE traffic offences that will get your car impounded are:

Vehicle design violations

  • Violating the rules of using commercial plate numbers: AED 500 fine, 7 days retention
  • Using a leisure bike that has three or more wheels on the road: AED 3,000 fine, 90 days retention
  • Using a vehicle without plates: AED 3,000 fine, 23 black points, 90 days retention for light vehicles
  • Modifying the vehicle's engine or Chassis without permission: AED 1,000 fine, 12 black points, 30 days retention

Driving violations

  • Exceeding the maximum speed limit of no more than 60km/hour: AED 1,500 fine, 6 black points, 15 days retention for light vehicles
  • Exceeding the maximum speed limit of no more than 80km/hour: AED 3,000 fine, 23 black points, 60 days retention for light vehicles
  • Exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 60km/hour: AED 2,000 fine, 12 black points, 30 days retention for light vehicles
  • Driving without insurance: AED 500 fine, 4 black points, 7 days retention
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or other illegal substances: Fine determined by local court, 60 days retention for light vehicles, 1 year driving license suspension

  • Driving a vehicle that has an expired registration: AED 500 fine, 4 black points, 7 days retention (if the vehicle expired more than 3 months ago)

  • Using the vehicle in marches without permission or in unauthorised situations: AED 500 fine, 4 black points, 15 days retention for light vehicles
  • Overloading a transport vehicle: AED 500 fine, 4 black points, 7 days retention

Accident violations

  • Causing a serious accident or injuries: Fine determined by local court, 23 black points, 30 days retention for light vehicles
  • Causing someone's death: Fine determined by local court, 23 black points, 60 days retention for light vehicles
  • Not stopping your vehicle after causing a small accident: AED 500 for light vehicles, AED 1000 for heavy vehicles, 8 black points for light vehicles, 7 days retention for light vehicles
