Trash to Treasure: 6 Finds That Make Charming Wall Shelves

There’s a lifestyle trend that’s sweeping the globe, and quite ironically, it’s coming from the most unexpected of places – the trash bin.

It’s a movement called upcycling or repurposing – turning something that’s seemingly disposable and useless into something that’s functional and valuable – and it’s a trend that’s gaining traction in communities all over the world, including Dubai.

If you’re looking to hop on the bandwagon, one of the best places to start is at home! Here are a few old items you might find lying around that have upcycling potential!

1. Dresser and cabinet drawers

Old and rickety cabinets often have nowhere else to go but garbage disposal, but their drawers can still be of use! The rustic feel of old, weathered wood can add a touch of warmth to your home, or if you prefer, a fresh coat of paint could make it seem brand new. The best part is, it’s up to you to decide how it looks!

2. Wooden pallets and crates

Oftentimes, wooden pallets and crates go straight from the supply room to the dumpster. But a few nails, a hammer, and a healthy dose of imagination can turn these disposables into delightful wall shelves for showcasing family portraits, mugs, collectibles, and other trinkets.

3. Wine and cheese crates

You know those wooden boxes that wine bottles and cheese come in? Those can easily become the new home for your scented candles, precious potted plants, and even picture frames! A sprinkle of ingenuity is all you need to turn these boxes into upcycled wall shelves, and you don’t even need to be a handyman to do it.

4. Old doors and windows

Just recently replaced your old windows or creaky door? Here’s a nifty upcycling hack: Sand and smooth your old door or window, paint it fresh, and hang it on your wall! It makes for a nice focal point and discussion piece in a room (“so what’s the story behind this hanging door right here?”), and it’s a nice little nook for displaying your home decorations.

5. Discarded bed frames and other furniture

Transform that old bed frame you’ve had sitting in the attic for months now into a rustic bookshelf. You can free up floor space in your reading nook by having an upcycled wall-mounted bookshelf where you can store your books, knick-knacks, and other stuff that you often keep lying around – it’s a brilliant alternative, easy, free and great opportunity to get creative!

6. Vintage luggage, old suitcases, and copper pipes

Old suitcases, vintage luggage, and even old copper piping may seem dispensable at first glance, but these can also be turned into ingenious, rustic wall-mounted shelves and bookcases with a bit of work! The key here is to bring out your thinking cap and think outside the box.

If you’re looking for other creative upcycling ideas, there’s plenty to be found on the internet! We’ve seen some incredible upcycling transformations online – from guitars transformed into portable storage spaces into entire boats repurposed for home use – and there’s no doubt you can also do something incredible if you put your mind to it!
