New Park in Dubai Lets Dogs Run Free

Earlier this year, it was reported that it was now illegal for owners to walk their dog without the lead in public areas. Failure to do so can result in a hefty AED 10,000 fine, which has left dog owners left with very few options on where to give their pets some much-needed exercise.

Even in some of our recommended dog-walking spots, pooches must be on their leash at all times. But now, thanks to a couple of fellow dog lovers, a new project in Dubai now offers ample space for owners to let their dogs run free in a safe environment.

Launched by a Saluki breeder and two pet lovers, Dubai now has it's first outdoor park designed specifically for dogs. Located in Al Awir, it's the only outdoor space in the Emirate where canines can run free without their leads in a safe place.

Jan Al Mheri, a Scot who has lived in the UAe for over 25 years, encouraged her Emirati husband to donate farmland near their home in Al Awir, The National reported.

Dubbed 'The Bark Park', the place has both irrigation and electricity and is now open as an official dog-walking facility that hopes to promote and encourage responsible dog ownership in the Emirate.

Not only is it a great place for your pooch to socialise, but it's also a comfortable environment for owners to meet other like-minded people.

What's at The Bark Park?

First of all, there's plenty of space to let your pooch run free. Having lots of space to roam is important for many breeds, especially Salukis, which are the traditional Bedouin dogs who can run as fast as 70 km/h.

Secondly, there's plans to have a BBQ are as well as a site office, and there is also an area reserved for smaller dogs to enjoy.

There are rules however that owners must follow: all dogs must be vaccinated and microchipped, and nervous dogs should be muzzled just incase. Children younger than the age of 12 are not able to enter, either.

How much does it cost to visit?

Entry fees are AED 50 for the first dog, and AED 25 for the second, third and so on.

But there is a limit; only a maximum of 20 dogs are allowed in the park at any one time.

Why is this place so important for dogs and their owners?

A lack of sufficient outdoor activity can have a significant impact on a dog's health and behaviour. if they don't have the right amount of exercise, it can lead to various problems that are results of boredom or restlessness, like destructive chewing, digging or being over-excitable and rough during play. They may even frequently bark or whine, too.

Simply put, if dogs don't have an outlet for their energy and inquisitive nature, it can manifest into bad habits you've no doubt spent time training them no to do.
