Fed-up of fillers? Want a fuller look without injections? Here’s why you should consider lip liner instead.

Since Cara Delevingne made us brow-obsessed and Kylie Jenner left us yearning for a bigger pout, people have turned to aesthetics and cosmetics to enhance their look. The latter, however, was achieved through injections – a treatment that is perhaps too invasive for most.

Thankfully the semi-permanent trend has picked up steam over recent years, and with it has brought some of the best aesthetic treatments and results we see nowadays. From lash tints to microbladed brows, to semi-permanent eyeliner and, the topic of today’s feature, lip liner tattoos, SPMU procedures are rapidly gaining popularity.

If you want to enhance your lips without going down the road of injectables, here’s our complete guide to getting permanent lip liner in Dubai and what you should know before having the treatment done.

What is permanent lip liner?

To clarify, lip tattoos are only meant to enhance lips – not create actual fullness.

A permanent lip liner procedure is simply a mild form of semi-permanent tattoo that is designed to define your lips. The colour is implemented around the border of your lips and helps to give the illusion and appearance of a fuller lip. It does not actually create volume or puffiness.

Is permanent lip liner permanent?

Unlike actual tattoos, which penetrate deep into the skin’s surface to create long-lasting colour – permanent lip liner isn’t actually permanent. The procedure doesn’t penetrate as deeply as a traditional tattoo, and thus results last just a few years making the treatment semi-permanent.

It is possible to have the colour as close to your natural lip colour, but this means that the liner won’t last as long. The more natural your colour, the more frequent your touch-ups will be.

How is permanent lip liner applied?

Different technicians have varied techniques, but generally, the liner is applied to the border of your lips, which is then blended with a lighter colour towards the middle of your pout. Some may even leave the interior part of your lip without colour to enhance the ‘natural’ look.

Choose a highly skilled technician who can blend beautifully to avoid heavy-handed results that look like a dark lip border.

Years ago, permanent make-up was applied with regular tattoo ink, but nowadays pigment is primarily used. This is thicker and helps to give a more natural, powdery finish. The downside is that it exfoliates out of your skin, and since you always use your lips to talk, eat and drink – it’s going to happen faster.

How long does it take for lips to heal after permanent make-up?
You should be able to immediately resume your daily schedule with no-downtime post-treatment, and the healing process takes roughly 10 days to fully heal. Your lips may look very dry and chapped as they heal and the colour may go lighter – but as your skin heals, it comes back.

Expect to see the full, truest colour after about two weeks.

How long does permanent lip liner last?

Gradual fading can be expected for all micro-pigmentation procedures like lip liner, and so the length the results last depends on the individual’s skin type and the specific shade used.

Most lip liner colour lasts three to five years, although some may not fade for as long as 10 years.

Why do people get a lip tattoo?

As we age, the contrast, definition and 3D effect of our lips flatten, resulting in lips that appear to be faded or have disappeared entirely. Having lip liner done in Dubai means you can wake-up in the morning already wearing your favourite pinky-nude lipstick.

As we’ve mentioned, it doesn’t make your lips bigger, but it does give the appearance that they are and adds youthful colour and definition that lasts up to three years.

How painful is permanent lip liner?

Lips are super sensitive and are one of the most painful areas to have tattooed, so if you’re wanting this done you may want to pay extra for an anesthetic to block the pain. Having anesthetic also helps to get the procedure done much faster.

People who are susceptible to cold sores should take preventative medication since the stimulation by the needle can cause an outbreak and affect your results.

Risks of having a lip tattoo

Since your lips are used frequently for talking and consuming food and drink, getting lip liner carries a risk of getting an infection as the mouth harbors hundreds of kinds of bacteria.

Following the initial procedure, every touch-up brings in a new added risk of infection, too.

Avoid eating foods with a high acid content, like vinegar, tomatoes or citrus fruits as these may cause irritation for a time post-procedure.

If you suffer from an allergic reaction, which causes swelling or painful lumps, consult a doctor immediately.
