Reading the air travel thread makes me thankful that I’m not scared of flying, but it got me thinking about things I do hate… (Hey, it’s Thursday afternoon and I’m counting down the hours til hometime) For me, I absolutely hate heights. I always try to face my fears and do things like rock climbing, go on rollercoasters etc but it always scares the bejeesus out of me, and I usually end up clambering to the side of the wall and trying (and failing) to press my body into the side as I cling on for dear life! And whenever I’m on a rollercoaster, the first part where it’s very slow as the carriage climbs to the top is absolutely terrifying.

So… what do you hate? What would you gladly never do again?

My other real hate is smelly houses which I gained after years of being in my job. I work in social housing and have to visit homes that you would not even let a rat live in. I sometimes get the sweats while trying to interview someone while I sit surrounded by rubbish, dog turds on the carpet and a tenant who has probably not set foot in the bathroom for months. It got so bad once that while out with a collegue we stopped at someones house to check the tenant had cleaned it to my collegues expectations (complaints of nasty smells from neighbours) and as he opened the door I had to clutch hold of the drainpipe and was dry heaving. The tenant told my collegue "I cleaned the house, its as fresh as a daisy", so my collegue said "well going by the state of my collegue here I dont really think you did a good job". Now before I visit someone I ask around if their a known stinker or not as it just makes me physically ill and I have to prepare myself and take deep breaths so I dont heave ho while interviewing them. edited by imanesmama on 05/05/2011

OK so this is not a phobia, but it is something I hate......scary movies. How many of you like them. I just can't understand why someone would put themselves through the experience as well as the nighmares afterwards. I could never watch a scary movie, especially spirit / ghost ones. I can barely cope with Harry Potter. I love scary movies but not too graphic. My husband loves the SAW films, I watched one and that was enough, too much blood and guts and non stop nastiness for me. The last film I watched was called "The Human Centipede" now that gave me nightmares.

Must admit I'm going back to England for a holiday in the next few weeks and have already started waking up in a cold sweat, thinking about spiders. They totally controlled my life when I was living there..... Guess I need to get a grip?!

Heights, especially on stairs and escalators, but slightly stranger then that: BANANAS!!!! Can't stand them; their smell, the taste, the sound they make when being mushed (or eaten by people who can't keep their mouths closed). Disgusting! Have not eaten one for the last 23 years and will leave a room if someone close by eats one.

Some weird phobias going on in this thread! I'll add my two: Roaches (any size and kind) and big spiders like the basement kind we have in Denmark.

Bogong moths-huge hairy moths -my brother used to put live ones in my bed at night so perhaps it is an understandable fear as I have no issues with any other creepy crawlies...and an extremely odd phobia-buttons in bulk (like a jar full)-eeek-no idea why-can cope with individual ones on clothing but that is about it!

SAW was good in the beginning, when it was more about the story lines and twists, it was cleverly done then. These days it's all blood and gore.

I like the idea of movies like Hostel and Saw. I usually end up hiding under the blanket within the first five minutes and DH switches the TV off.

Have to agree with you Chocs01.....I am more of a Miss Marple / Midsomer Murders type. Quaint, country cottage murders..with not a drop of blood in sight. Not realistic at all, but suits me. I have a friend back in UK who just loves scary movies....the scarier the better!!! Just don't understand it. Why make yourself frightened. How can you just expect to go to bed and have a good night's sleep after seeing some of these films.

can't stand ants and flies. Unfortunately, both are very common here. The ants are coming out in thousands now and I am going mad. edited by tahm563 on 05/05/2011 I found an entire ants nest in one of my house plants earlier - the little tiny brown ones, they just constantly seem to keep coming, I can't get rid of them, it's driving me crazy.

Oh yeah, that's right - it does! Were you served it at school? Yeah, that and slimey spinach - blurgh! I can show my age by saying we would get battered spam. It could be smelled when they started cooking it around 10am and lingered throughout the school all day *bleurgh*

Flying, flying oh and flying. Haven't even opened the thread entitled bumpy ride in case it is about scary flights. Have only flown twice in last 13 years due to my fear and the last time was non stop turbulence with the most awful landing. I really thought I was about to die. I am terrified about having to fly again, definately the worst part of our relocation. I haver even looked in to the possibility of a cruise Uk to Dubai, but this time of year they're all coming the other way :(. My other phobia is lifts, would rather walk up 20 flights of stairs than get in a lift. Rubberduck, I did a course to help deal with fear of flying a few years ago. I have the info booklet which I have scanned. If you think it might help you send me an email on sanddy . dogg @ gmail . com and I will send it to you by return.
