Is Switzerland a good place to visit at Easter (late April this year)? If so, which places would you recommend for a quiet, non-skiing holiday that has scenery, good food and wine, shopping and a generally good place to relax.

Thanks.

If you go to Zermatt - you have to go to a little restaurant up the mountian called "franz and Heidi's" amazing, amazing food, and lots of fun!

Thanks ladies. I am now thinking a combination of Venice and Zermatt, ending up with the Glacier train to St. Moritz. Everything looks beautiful on the websites! It makes it hard to decide. Venice, brilliant idea! Enjoy!

simpleasabc, we went to Greece (Santorini) with the kids in May year before last and we hit a cold spell. We literally sat around looking at a freezing cold pool for 2 weeks! Horrible. I suppose it is luck of the draw! Shame - the last time I went to Greece was Christmas 2009 and it was beautiful, we had to wear coats, no swimming, but gorgeous blue skies and 21 degC. Time before that was early Easter and it wasn't so good..

We spent an Easter in St. Moritz and it was lovely. There was just enough snow to ski above but the days were warm below. You may or may not get enough snow so you would have to be prepared to do something else if ski conditions aren't great. simpleasabc, we went to Greece (Santorini) with the kids in May year before last and we hit a cold spell. Depending on how long you've got, you could fly into Milan and spend time there shopping and then take the train to all the places mentioned in Switzerland, as it is not a very large country! 5 hours by car from one end to the other!

Lugano and then head over to Italy too, maybe rent a car. Ticino(area where is Lugano, lots of lakes) is quite Italian influenced, good food, lakes, close to milan, mendrisio big outlet center. Otherwise I absolutely adore Zurich! If Ticino in Easter you have to book in advance!

best chocolate bunnies you'll ever get, and I am sure we had gingerbread when we were there last time at Easter..... Fab food, lovely walks in the mountians, what could be better!!! If you want shopping, you could land in Milan, shop for a day or two, travel via train into switzerland, get your tax back on the way, thenhave some wholesome time in the mountians, and fly out of Zurich or Geneva depending on where you are.

I'm sorry, I've just seen it's advertised as a great place for skiing - but out of ski season, as Easter is, it is also a lovely peaceful place to visit, train journeys being great and easy to visit other countries, also, Italy's fab end of April. For the record, if I were going on hols end of April, I'd go to Greece - but then I'm biased!!

Graubunden (les Grisons), except for the shopping bit. No good shopping in Switzerland except for fondue and local wines, cheeses and saucissons!
