Dying to get my hands on Susannah Cahalan's Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness. Need time to visit Kinokuniya as it is only available there for the time being. :) edited by midnyt-tears on 19/12/2012

Just started "The Monk and the Philosopher" By Matthieu Ricard. Really enjoying it. It's a serious of conversations. Kind of like "My Dinner with Andre" the movie but not as heavy because you can go at your own pace as you read through it. Really interesting though. Matthieu Ricard is a French-Buddhist Monk who interprets for the Dalai Lama and translates Tibetan text to French and English. He studied for years as a molecular biologist and had his PhD. His father is the philosopher and has studied, written, and teaches about philosophy. Downloaded it on my iPad.

I am currently reading "11-22-63" (The Day That Changed the World) by Stephen King. It's about an English Teacher who has the opportunity to travel back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. I'm a few chapters into it, and it's already getting so good!

I got a kindle for my birthday last September and have been reading up a storm(more than 100 books) and have read some real dodgy ones but have found some gems. The help, The night circus, Millenium trilogy, 1Q84, The Passage, The Road, The game if Thrones series, the Dexter books, the Dark Brotherhood books and The Stephanie Plum books are up there. On the bad side, unfortunately lots of books from the New York Times best seller list, have been dissapointing-so many cheesey romance books. Fave book of all time, The Pillars of the Earth- try it, its epic :)

Desperate in Dubai - light, entertaining, occasionally very funny, and according to one of Emirati women who I happened to talk about the book - exaggerating...

I recently read Me Before You as well following a recommendation. I bawled my eyes out and it played on my mind for ages afterwards. Had to buy my own copy after I read it just to let others borrow it from me. Brilliant. I've just finished this - dreading my family coming home to find me crying and ruining the end! Managed to get through it and mop the tears before they got home.

If you're looking for a very light read , I recommend Jenny lawson's (aka the bloggess) let's pretend this never happened (a mostly true memoir ) . Lol absolutely hilarious and found myself cackling with laughter on a plane ( remember that bean episode ?) . Not for those who expect any form of sanity in their books lol and definitely not for you if you have an issue with a bit of cursing .

I recently finished Me Before You - not bad - chick-lit stuff. And Anatomy of a Disappearance by Hisham Matar, a Libyan author. I liked this a lot - subtle and beautifully written. Now onto My Dearest, I Wanted To Tell You by Louisa Young, which I'm really enjoying. It is set in London/France during the First World War. A bit grim in parts but very moving. If you like Downton Abbey, you'll like this.

Finished A thousand Splendid Suns and its the first book that made me cry. I think the way the story is told from a woman's perspective really touched my heart. I thought it was better than The Kite Runner by the same author. AMAZING Khalid Hosseni i think I am halfway through this book (thanks to the recommendations on here). I love it already.

Just finished 'Me before You'. Still have tears in my eyes hours later! Since CHristmas I have read 15 books (got a Kindle for christmas). This is what I have read: 1. The Hunger Games - I didn't particularly like this one. It feels too teen literature to me. Like reading 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' as an adult. A fantastic book for a teenager but not quite the same when you're in your 30's. 2. The Help - a great easy read that was beautiful to read.I have subsequently seen the movie which I also loved. 3. Saving Katya - a short story but pleasant enough 4. The Bridge - another short story and quite enjoyable 5. Chasing Rainbows - I can't even recall what this was about so was obviously totally unmemorable. 6. Chasing China - interesting if a bit farfetched to totally hit it's mark. 7. The Collectibles - I really enjoyed this book. 8. Leaving the Comfort Cafe - unmemorable 9. The Language of Flowers - read this for a bookclub and loved it. so different and beautiful to read. 10. Growing up Amish - I found this too self indulgent and all a bit tedious. But interesting to give insight into this different world. 11. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - interesting and totally different to what I normally read. Recommend if you are looking for somehting a bit unique. 12. Children of the Fog - a good story but not that fantastic. 13. Annie Begins - an easy read but I found it a bit slow and boring. 14. Watch Me Die- this was an intereting book. Lighthearted but serious mixed together. 15. Me Before You - This is the best book I'd read in ages.

Double Comfort Safari Club by Alexander McCall Smith.....reading the series, so next is The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party ....when reading these books I have very strong visual images in my mind of the exact places he describes and I really feel that I am there within the story, like a fly on the wall

The Shadow of the Wind is by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Great book. Just read another of his called The Midnight Palace - it is kind of a teen horror story. A bit average. I have just started You Deserve Nothing by Alexander Maksik. About a teacher at an expat school in Paris. Anyone read it?

Just finished reading The Help and enjoyed it. Waiting for DH to come back tomorrow with Water for Elephants and Shadow of the Wind. I was an avid reader but with three kids and no help, my reading had taken a backseat and I had no idea which books to choose till I saw this thread. Thanks for the recommendations ladies. Shadow of the Wind is my all time favourite book. The Help is great too. I watched the movie at Xmas and it was so good especially the Minnie chocloate cake part Who is the author for Shadow of the Wind?

Tales From A Midwife by Jennifer Worth. Seriously fascinating stuff. I loved that book. They have turned it into a series in the UK and i watched the 1st episode last week. Excellent watching but not as good as the book. Jennifer Worth sadly passed away last year Oh have they?? Would love to see it. Lets hope it comes out as a DVD at some point. Can't put the book down..Its amazing how people lived, only a relatively short time ago. Sad to hear of her passing :-( edited by captainjacky on 19/01/2012 Jenny Agutter Pam Ferris Miranda Hart plays Chummy and she certainly suits the role :-) There is one character in the book that i love. I dont want to say too much as i dont want to give it away but i guess you will feel the same once you have finished it. It is a Female and she is very elderly. My old next door neighbour was a Midwife in the 40/50/60 and i grew up wanting to be a nurse due to her stories. Shame the NHS in the 90's changed otherwise i may of followed that vocation Is it Sister Monica Joan?! I'm just reading the part about the workhouse...Scary stuff. And that lady who had 25 children.... Gulp!! It the old lady who lives in the slum and has a fascination with pregnant ladies. The toe nail part of the book :-) The workhouses sounded awful. Oh yes... I get you now...And apparently her toe nails are now an exhibit at some museum!! So many moving stories... They are certainly the generation that made Britain Great...
