Just thought I would let you know about an event I am involved in - there are lots of ways for you and your kids to get involved - please see below :) The event is being organised by Qatar Green Building Council's Solid Waste Interest Group.

A professional artist has designed a work of art themed around Qatar and the environment. It will be made entirely out of plastic bottle tops and recycled plastic, all mounted on recycled wood. The finished piece will be unveiled at The Pearl-Qatar on March 31, to coincide with Earth Hour Day. We aim to demonstrate the beauty and value in what we might normally throw away and to raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.

How to get involved

We need volunteers to help assemble the design at The Pearl-Qatar over the weekends of March 23 & 24 and March 30 & 31, 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm each day. You don’t have to come all day, just a morning or an afternoon for a minimum of 1 hour. You’ll be sorting and preparing bottle tops and gluing tops to the art work under the direction of the artist and a team of assistants. We’ll supply everything you need including a recycled shirt to protect your clothes!

Anyone over the age of 10 can take part. But spaces are limited. Please send an e- mail to giving your name and contact details, how many people will be with you (and their ages if under 18), and the day(s) and time(s) you are available. The same e-mail should be used for questions.

Children under 10 are welcome to come along on March 31st for the big unveiling, as there will be activities then for them to get involved in.

We’d also love to hear from established and aspiring artists who’d like to work on pieces alongside the main work.

A full programme of events will be issued in March so please keep a look out for further announcements about this fun and exciting event!

There are also opportunities for schools and youth groups to get involved, both in the run-up to the event and on the day itself. Please email if your group would like to get involved.

Can you collect bottle tops?

A BIG thank you to everyone who is collecting plastic bottle tops for us. Please don’t stop! We need at least 60,000 by March 23.
We need ANY plastic cap as long as it’s clean and plastic, and as many different colours as you can find and all sorts of shapes and sizes! But NO metal or coffee cup lids please.
E-mail for collection.

Shameless bump - please let me know if your children's schools might be interested in taking part, or any other kids' groups that people might be involved in :) edited by amy77 on 05/03/2012

Ah that's a shame, but if you could get them involved in collecting bottle tops, that would be great! There will be activities on the unveiling day (March 31st) for the little ones if they'd like to come along. Admin, you have mail.

DebK: Are you a teacher? If so, which school? I am in the process of contacting all the English speaking schools to see if any of them are interested in getting involved (either in the actual art work itself, or in spin-off projects of any sort). Thank you for collecting bottle tops for us, that's fantastic! I teach at Kid'n Around Kindergarten. Our students are only 3 and 4 years old, so I think they're a tad young to help in other ways. :)

Good luck with the project - would loved to have helped, but will be on vacation at that time!

Admin: I am only volunteering on this project, so will have to refer your request to the Qatar Green Building Council's PR team to put something together for you to make sure it fits in with all their key messages. I will do this tonight and get back to you ASAP. Thanks :) DebK: Are you a teacher? If so, which school? Hmmm... I will pass this information on to my coworkers. I have been saving plastic bottle lids for a bit now as I have used them to create some numeracy and literature activities, and have even used them to create my own stamps. But I now have more than I wll need for the next year or so and was about to start throwing them out again. Instead I'll create a collection box in my classroom and continue to collect them to donate to this project... and if I can get the other teachers on board with collecting them we should be able to collect a good number by the collection date. :)

Hi Amy, We would like to run an editorial feature on this- can you send an article about what you are doing and why and we will give it its own dedicated page. We'll put it in the events section too. Warm regards, EW Admin
