Sushi?

Hey ladies!

Hope everyone is well! I've been invited to a sushi night at Channels tonight and cant decide if I should go or not. Im 19 weeks, and have been googling what you can / cant eat and think that you can still have smoked salmon, crab sticks....that kind of thing (obviously the veggie ones would be fine). I dont like sashimi or nigiri so tend to stick to the rolls anyway.

Is anyone else still eating sushi? Has anyone been to the sushi night at Channels? Do they have other stuff aswell as sushi? What do you reckon - to go or not to go? So many questions..... Decisions decisions!!

TIA! :) xx

Sushi lover here as well. I am also pregnant and I ate California roll. Although I love tuna rolls and salmon, I did not eat anything raw. When you are pregnant it would not be a good idea. I would go back to eating sushi once I deliver the baby.

Hey ladies! Thanks for your replies! Unfortunately, I didnt get to see any of them before i went out, but decided to go. The majority of the sushi there was actually veggie stuff, so i stuck to that (altho was completely unaware of the rice potentially being a bit risky! oops!!) and there were a few hot soup / noodle / curry / rice dishes too, so there was much more to choose from than id anticipated. Had a lovely evening, apart from eating WAY too much and then couldnt sleep as i was so stuffed!! Thanks again! Will consider the whole rice thing a bit more carefully next time too. Lucky this time i guess! Phew! :) xx

To be 100% sure, I'd steer clear of any sushi as even prepared salads and cold rice can be risky unless you KNOW they are fresh, handled hygienically and stored safely. If you can order hot meal options, go for that and have a lovely night. :) I agree with Green-ish. You should go but only order the hot sati skewers or rice with some Miso soup. It's not safe to eat anything raw when pregnant. edited by derien on 28/02/2012

I have steered clear of sushi but do still enjoy my smoked salmon...i make sure I buy a good brand and consume it within max 2 days. We have a packet in the fridge that's been open for 4 days and I wont be having it anymore now - DH is happy to polish it off!

Oh how ive missed sushi! It's definitely on my after- delivery wish list! Apart from the usual concerns surrounding eating sushi whilst pregnant, it's important to remember that the rice used in the rolls can actually be the biggest cause of food poisoning. Uncooked rice frequently contains bacteria called Bacillus cereus. These bacteria can form protective spores that survive the cooking process. If cooled slowly, these spores can germinate, grow and produce an emetic (vomit inducing) toxin. Reheating rice before serving will not inactivate the emetic toxin or kill all the bacterial cells, so the rice may not be safe. If you consume cooked rice that is contaminated with Bacillus cereus toxin you are likely to experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting within 1 to 6 hours, occasionally followed by diarrhoea within 10-12 hours. The illness is short lived with recovery within 12-24 hours. Sorry to be a buzz kill but it's something to think about.

I would stear clear of the smoked salmon. I was explicitly told by my Dr not eat it, when I asked. Crabsticks I am not sure, I think the meat is cooked in the process of making them. I personally would stick to the veggie rolls, I know very sad I also love sushi and am looking forward to my first visit to the Japanese restaurant after this baby is delivered. Do you know if the serve other things, like tempura or soups or other cooked food at your event? Edit to add: I just read up on the crab sticks, if you mean surimi by that, then apparently that would be safe to eat as it is cookedwhile being processed, if you mean real raw crab meat then you shouldn't eat it. edited by Lilli34 on 27/02/2012 edited by Lilli34 on 27/02/2012
