I need to vent about Baskin and Robbins so here we go.

I regularly get some ice-cream for the kids in BR while around the mall and always give them a child scoop (in a cup), which was always priced at AED 6, so x 2 kids AED 12 ... sometime in January we were in MOE and they charged me AED 16 which I found strange but what the heck, not a biggy to argue about, maybe they increased the price., AED 16 is still fair enough.

Then a few weeks ago we were in Souq Madinat Jumeirah and I ordered 2 kids scoops and got charged AED 24... so I thought surely a mistake... no Ma'am, a scoop is AED 12, so your total is AED 24...so I said ''is your kids scoop is AED 12?''
Answer: no ma'am we do not have kids scoops here... right, so why did you not tell me that when I ordered 2 KIDS scoops...???
answer: I gave you the regular scoop Ma'am''.... Well , helloooo, I did not order a regular scoop nor do I think a regular scoop is suitable for a child, it is too much for a child to eat, and you should TELL me that you do not have a kids scoop when I ask for one instead of just giving me the next size up.....The lack of expression on the face of the server showed me that he gets this a lot; and he just answered: 24 dirhams please Ma'am....

do they train their staff to just ignore the word Kids scoop, give a regular one and charge accordingly as no parent is going to take that ice-cream away from their kids ...

Which is right, I rather pay AED 24 than have 2 Ice-screaming kids...so I gave up , paid and left making a mental note never to go to BR in SMJ anymore.

A week or so later , I noticed on the board of BR in Dubai Mall that there is no mention of kids scoops anymore... we headed of the Cold Stone instead, no more BR for us!

If the A/C unit in the cold storage warehouse malfunctions, esp in the Dubai heat, that's like a huge amount of ice cream with wonky icy texture which cannot be sold due to public health issues. Surprisingly (or not) you can get horrific food poisoning from refreezed ice cream...Dthat's what I meant to say. Considering the price of whipping cream, double cream milk, I find the cost of making at home sort of equals buying my fave brand. I do agree that home-made strawberry (using frozen Egyptian strawberries) and chocolate (C4 dessert chocolate) are worth the effort.

Out of all the food items they sell here, I find it strange that ice cream is so expensive even the one liter containers from supermarket. Why is it then? I even find imported ones from UK and US even cheaper than the locally made brands. Strange indeed.Ice cream is a nightmare to ship and store before it is distributed to supermarkets. also, mcd's and bk both give the dh1 ice cream in a cup - just say you want the ice cream but in a glass/paper cup for the kid.

I kept meaning to come back to post on this thread, the BR in Arabian centre and the one in Bin Sougat still do the 6 dhs option. I even asked at the Bin Sougat one and the guy there said I was the 3rd or 4th person to ask and he said all the shops should offer the AED 6 scoop, he also said its very popular.

blimey !! sorry but you all sound so tight-fisted..quibbling over a couple of quid for an ice-cream...in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter ? guess it's just me.... It's not that, it's the fact that they fail to mention there is no longer a kids scoop when I ask for one... At cold stone 2 kids scoops are AED 20 only AED 4 difference, I am not going to walk to the other end of the mall to make that ''great'' saving, but I do mind being ripped off by staff failing to communicate to me, plus a regular scoop is far too big, sure I'll finish it off for my 2 year old, but my almost 6yr old happily scoops it all up, I find that size unnecessary for her age. The cold stone kids portion is smaller than the regular BR size...

I used to eat a kid's cone as the single ones are way too big - if you are supposed to be being good, that is ! :D This is exactly the same issue as when you ask for a small coffee and they serve you and charge you for a medium. They should inform you first.

Why not get a 12aed scoop and ask for an extra cup, then scoop half out into the other cup? Just have to make sure each child wants the same flavour! As for McD's ice cream, I just ask for a small cup when buying their 1aed ice cream for DS as he's too young to eat one of their ice creams fast enough. Never had a problem, just explain the reason and the staff always help. When we were home in the UK last summer, it was an average of £2 for an ice cream, so about the same price as here. These were for a regular sized cornet, not the big double ones.

that is why we hardly ever get ice cream at any of these places anymore. I just don't see any reason why I should pay 12 or more Dirhams for a scoop of ice cream. We sometimes get ice lollies or ice creams from the supermarkets or the little groceries (if I trust them to keep their freezers running propperly) and that is much more reasonable. I can"t get my head around it that I should pay so much money for mediocre tasting ice cream (Baskin and Robins, Londondary) or to get a piece of frozen butter (Marble slab, Cold Stone , YUK!) , when back home you get a single scoop of really good ice cream for about 5DHS, and that is if yu want to treat yourself, you can have it cheaper too if yu want to. And don't get me started on those little ice cream kiosks in the malls that sell the scoop for up to 20 DHS and on top of that chat to your kids first, without asking you. I mean, my child will not be paying for the ice cream so don't you dare ask her if she wants one uless you give it to her for free. Seriously the next ice cream seller ho tries this out again will get smacked!

I got a kids' scoop at the BR in the Arabian Center on Wednesday. I will go there again soon and will update this thread if they do not give me a kids' scoop. Personally, I hate the McDonald's 1 dirham soft serve. It may be ok if your children are older, but if they are little, it melts way too quickly and they will not give it to you in a bowl. It ends up being a huge frustration. I'll stick with the proper ice cream places or get only sundaes or McFlurries from McDonald's. if you need it in a bowl just get a plain McFlurry, the ice cream's the same...

They must have scrapped it in the last 2 weeks. I always get a kids scoop for myself as well as DD as the normal scoop is too big. The normal scoop used to be AED 8 so if they have put it up to AED 12 we won't be going there again. BR in DCC weould always try and give you the super big size even if you asked for kids size. Price increase just before the heat arrives and business booms. That happened to us a couple months ago. Regular customers to the DIP BR - so I know the price. Then a new lady starts - she's only there on Wednesdays and the price increased. Thought it strange, but never paid too much attention to it. It happened again - on a Wednesday when the regular guy was not there, same lady. So I complained - she was charging us more, plus not putting it in the till. Instead of firing her, they moved her to a different location!!!! Like that will fix the problem.
