DD is currently learning to drive here (although she has had some lessons before so isn't a complete novice). The driving instructor is telling her to exceed the speed limit. So, it's got me wondering whether, if she did this on the actual test, she would pass or fail or whether it just depends on the tester on the day as I understand it's all a bit of a lottery!

Anyone who's learnt to drive here from scratch can you let me know their experience of this please.

DD passed back in June!! First time - 3 minutes drive during the test - the mind boggles! DH has given her extra Daddy-lessons though before we've let her out on the road.

I recently passed my test and I learnt from scratch here in Dubai. Tip: always stay within the speed limit if you're in a residential area then 40km/h if you're on the main road then 60-80 km/h, free way then 100-120 km/h as a learner you must always stick to the extreme right lane unless told by your instructor/examiner to change lanes and as that lane is the 'slow' one then sticking to the speed limit is advisable unless if there are conditions where you must slow down the speed also the examiners don't like it when you slow down unnecessarily and drive below the speed limit. So if its 60km/h the speed limit then if road conditions allow stick to 60 km/h not below nor above. All the best

I used EDI as well and was very happy with my instructor, but like I said there is quite a bit of difference between the instructors. Learning to drive in Al Quoz is interesting as there is so much going on on the roads there. I wouldn't worry too much about the test. In most countries there are caps on the amount of people allowed to pass in one day. I was the last batch of the day when I did my test and still passed first go. Just stay calm, do as you are told, smile at the instructor. The one thing I did find very odd was that when you do your test there are up to four other candidates with you in the car and you switch when the instructor tells you to.

thanks ladies - and especially for the tip re time of test Sabrina! We're using Emirates Driving Institute. DH has been taking her out to a building site to practice too (yes we know it's not allowed!) and are aware you learn to pass the test not to drive. She's only had 2 x 2hr lessons so far (so 8 lessons) so is only driving round Al Quoz at the moment. I will get her to ask him what will happen if she did that on the test and see what he says!

I learnt to drive here a couple of months ago and was NOT allowed to exceed the speed limit. I was told I had to stay under the limit, both by my instructor and during my preparations for the test. I actually complained that during all my lessons and even during my high driving I never went over 100km as I think it is important to prepare people for high speed driving (120km) as well. During the test she would most definitely fail if she exceeded the speed limit.Advise her to follow all the rules (even the silly ones) during her test and she will be fine. What driving school is she using? I think there is a big difference in the schools here and also with the different instructors. <em>edited by muurtje on 12/05/2012</em>

It definitly is a bit of a lottery! I learned to drive here 12 years ago and all I really learned was how do pass the test, rather than how to drive (my parents taught me to drive, so i knew what I was doing when I first got in the car, the instructor was very surprised when I got in and knew what to do with a clutch) I believe they are only allowed to pass a certain amount of people a day, so your daughter should try get there early for the test, and hopefully be one of the first few to do the test. As for the speeding, it is common practice to allow 20km/h more than the road signs say, however for the test, I would stick to what the road signs say, just to be on the safe side. I wonder if the instructor is telling her to 'speed' to test her?

Anyone who's learnt to drive here from scratch can you let me know their experience of this please. from what i have heard of people learning to drive here, its a standard thing they will ask you to exceed the speed limit by say 20kph and pull in front of trucks etc, just to see if you are able to, in this neck of the woods its a necessaity.
