Hi ladies, feel a bit embarrassed as I should probably know but I'm 40 and my DH is 50, we have been trying for a baby (first) for quite a few years now. We originally got checked out 5 years ago in UK and everything ok. It's only this month that I decided to get some boxes of the ovulation sticks and I started using them as suggested on day 6 of my cycle. My periods are pretty regular. Anyway have been using them and even on the days where my mucas was the egg whitey (watery looking) I still didn't get a smiley face but I have continued using them still and nothing yet. I will keep testing for another 2 months and then if still nothing, I'll have to get checked out. Is a women fertile every month? I've always said if it happens then great but now I am getting slightly broody. Your experiences would be very helpful to me please and knowledge. Hope you can help please. Thank you.

Thank you hilsbils & scotts1 for you advice which I will follow up on. I already had the consultation last weekend with gynie and already paid upfront for the sperm test so I'll wait for these results. As for me she never run any tests on me anyway. So after this I will book an appointment at conceive as I really can't afford to waste much more time.

Definitely consider Dr Pankaj then as the AMH test is much cheaper than Dubai Mall medical centre who charged I think 1800aed!! An apt with Dr Munira is 500aed but that includes a scan during the consultation. Sperm test was 270. Full blood count is also important. Good luck

Hey there. I wasted so much time with a standard gyny and they still didn't run all the tests I should have had, I found this out much later from a specialist. I think you'd be better just cancelling that appointment and going straight to a fertility specialist now so they can do a full workup on you and your husband so you know where you stand and whether or not you require any fertility treatment. The Dr that Hilbils recommends sounds really good, I see she has a tie up with Conceive in Sharjah which is where I went for a consultation while in Dubai. So you could contact either of them, I guess Dubai Mall is much handier. That way they will run all the tests you both need instead of you telling your gyny what you think you need. Get a copy of the results from the test she has already done so you can take that with you. A consultation with Dr Pankaj at Conceive in Sharjah costs 400AED, if you have the consultation with scan at the same time it will cost 700AED, I'm pretty sure you would get scanned to check your antral follicle count which is an indication of your fertility. Follow up consultation is 300AED. The AMH test cost 760AED. Semen analysis costs 250AED. They may or may not suggest chromosome testing, this cost us 590AED each. There are other tests they may do but I don't know the costs.

Thanks for the info scotts1, it was just the gynie from my doctors surgery. She was nice enough but thinking about it now it just doesn't seem enough. I told her that we had been trying for 8 years and that we got checked out about 5 years ago and no probs. I told her that I started using the ovulating sticks in July and that I didn't ovulate but in August I did and I guess that's why she thinks then that I'm not ovulating every month. Personally looking back I would have expected more to be done considering I'm 41 and my DH is 51. I paid AED400 for about 20 minutes with her too - what should I do? My DH is doing the sperm analysis this weekend then obviously she needs to see me when the results are back from that. Should I just tell her that I want the AMH test done? I think this is wise right? I can highly recommend Dr Munira at Dubai Mall medical centre. When I went she ran all the tests immediately and explained all the issues. Since she is a fertility specialist she knows her stuff. Not sure if your medical insurance is covered there? I don't think my medical insurance covers anything like that, maybe I should enquire at work to see if it can be added? Do you know the cost of all the tests? Hope you feeling good by the way, and your little ones are growing nicely inside x

Just saw you asked about blockages also. The only way to check fallopian tubes is to have an HSG test, I had this done in Dubai 2 years ago and all was normal. However, if your AMH is low and IVF is recommended then this test would not be needed. It sounds like your gyny will be putting you on chlomid, again I would get your AMH checked before you think about taking chlomid as it is unlikely to make any difference if your AMH is low. Forgot to mention, if you get your AMH tested you will also get an ultrasound to check your antral follicle count, another way of checking how fertile you are.

I agree with Hilsbils, you should consider getting your AMH/FSH checked out. I went to a standard gynacologist when living in Dubai as we had not conceived after a year of trying, I was 36 at the time. She ran the standard ovulation blood test and ultrasound to check I was ovulating and all came back fine, my husband got checked out and all was fine and we got told to keep trying. It was only once I went to see a specialist dealing in infertility last year, here in Muscat, that I got an FSH test which showed I had low fertility (by then I was 37), I really wish I'd seen a specialist earlier. The AMH test is more accurate and shows what your ovarian reserve is, once it is low it can effect the quality of your eggs, most women will have diminished ovarian reserve in their late 30's early 40's (some earlier, some later) hence it becomes harder to conceive as you get older. I still ovulate but my reserve is low so I am undergoing IVF. I went to see Dr Pankaj at Conceive in Sharjah in March and he sent me for my AMH test at BioMed Lab in Sharjah, it cost 760AED. Good luck with the baby making ;-)

sounds right except for the medication part, why would she give medication to make you ovulate without doing a blood test to see if you are ovulating? Personally I would expect an internal [b'>ultrasound[/b'> which looks in your ovaries and also the double blood test to check ovulation, did you see a fertility specialist or just reg gynie?

So I went to see a gnacologist and with everything I told her, she saw no reason to run any blood test yet. My DH has to do a semen analysis first and if that's all ok then she will give me medication to make me ovulate every month. She will also do a internal examination of me next time. Does this all sound about right? Also if I do ovulate does that mean that I have no blockages? Anyway I will have to start the medication in about 4 weeks. I don't know how long to give it considering our ages. Any thoughts? I am also going to read up on IVF more - it's was definitely not something I ever would have considered but it might be our only option if all else fails.

My understanding is that you will ovulate within 12 hours therafter. But some of the best signs are other more physical ones. Our v.aginas are rather hostile most of the time (who knew?), so apparently just before ovulation our womb drops down slightly and the mouth opens a little and releases a little ladder to help the sperms - this "ladder" is like clear viscous egg white. Can you remember having this some months? That is also a clear sign that its ready, and also you can do your own internal investigation to notice how low, soft and open the womb feels. What a pallavar really !!:) I got 5 little embryos this morning ... 3 transferred in and 2 put on ice. Very exciting but now an anxious wait. xx

Thanks hilsbils, hope your eggs are doing well. Just need to ask, so I got a smiley and this means I'm fertile but what does this mean exactly? have I ovulated or am I about to ovulate in day a days time? I find it confusing! I've ordered the clear blue monitor which increases your chances more because it looks at estrogen as well as LH surge. Anyway thinking of you hilsbils x and other women in our situation x

Today I got a smiley face on my ovulation stick on day 12 of my cycle, I was so happy, I cried! I actually feel that I am kinda normal! Trouble is my DH isn't back home until Thursday but it will be straight upstairs when he comes home! I'm still going to get some tests done and probably the AMH test considering my age so I will keep this updated for everyone :-) Its such a rollercoaster from the very beginning isnt it? Whew. So I understand that sperm stays alive for a a few days and the best quality sperm is usually around 3 days old, so now you know that your ovulation is probably day 12, make sure you have some *relations* on say day 9 every month which helps for two reasons: 1- Those sperms could actually fertilise an egg even days later, and secondly 2- The sperm which you use on day 12/13 will be the very best quality. During IVF the doctors made very sure that tests and fertilisation was done when Dh had 3-4 day old sperm. When we initially made a mistake and tested with 7 day old sperm, the motility was very low as the sperms are starting to die and morph by then!! Best of luck and hugs too you. xxx

Just to update - so I had my period which lasts 4 days and I tested with my ovulation stick this morning (day 5) and it gave me a smiley face! Now I was quite excited about this but also a bit perplexed as this is out of the normal day 15 for most women - anyone else out there who is fertile literally the day after their period? Problem now is that my DH works away all week. This explains why I probably haven't fallen pregnant as I don't tend to have s*x the day after I stop. Would love to hear ladies. My pack says to start testing from day 7 so not far off. I often ovulate on day 10/11. The important phase is the time [i'>after [/i'> ovulation which has to be 14 days for full maturation etc. Its the time before ovulation which changes. I understand the biggest problem with time of ovulation being early is that the lining of the womb is still thin (has come out as a period) and needs to be much thicker to ensure the embryo implants. Ive actually never tested myself as early as day 5. Interesting to see if any other EW have an idea of what it means?

I have bought a very good female multivitamin and there are vitamins for preganancy which must help to. When I was in the UK I bought some agnus cactus which I dont this is available here. It is a natural hormone regulator. I also take evening primrose oil but dont think its available here. Its just a good all round support essential oil. There is a very good thread here if you do a search by an EW who turned her fertility around with lots of natural remedies.

Yes I'm going to book an appointment and get some tests done. Should I be taking any vitamins? What do you suggest? Folic Acid if nothing else. Unfortunately over a certain age the chances of birth defects increases and folic acid can reduce the chance of this.

Hi there. I think you would need to speak to a gynae or fertility doctor who would be best to advise you and read the results. My doctor at Dubai Mall medical centre is Doctor Munira and she is really good and easy to talk to. Her nurse will do the tests for you, and your Dh can do his test there too. However, to warn you that the AMH test is not cheap - I think I paid 1800 aed for it. It takes 2 weeks and they send results or samples abroad for verification which pushes up the price. The other fertility docs tend to be at specialist fertility clinics and charges differ. My medical insurance covers all appointments at the Dubai mall medical centre so I didnt pay for the appointment (despite me seeing fertility advice) but had to pay for that test. She will likely also test for insulin and thyroid - the other two big factors affecting female fertility.

Thank you for all your replies so far. I think what I should do is go and get some blood tests done, where do I go for this? my local doctor in springs? or the nurse? I really don't know where to go and what do I tell them?

I agree with previous post, you should test until day 16 or even longer. When I first started using them I tested too early and only realized that my ovulation was between day 17 and 19 only after I started charting my temperature. This is one of the best ways of knowing whether you have ovulated or not. Since I was using the strips for a long time I found it expensive to keep buying them here. So I bought a bunch of the striped from Amazon.com as well.

yeah you don't necc ovulate every month, and as I discovered even if you ARE ovulating the sticks don't necc show it. The first few time you use the sticks try using them from day 6 to day 16 to give you a better chance of figuring out what day you ovulate.

I bought the ovulation sticks from amazon uk. It was the first time I used these and I started testing the day after my period stopped. So not everyone ovulates every month? Is that correct? Where do I get this AMH test done, I live in the springs. Thanks. Hi fd... I think the smiley face is the digital one which is pricey - maybe 295 a box. But worth it for us. The others are the striped ones and are a little cheaper

Just wondering...Do you buy these sticks from any chemist? Does it matter if they are the line ones or the smilie face ones mentioned below?

The thing to do right away to is to get a doctor to do an AMH test which is the way that they determine your fertility age. A woman of 30 may only have an ovarian reserve of a 40 year old, or a 40 year old may have the fertility age of a 34 year old etc. I am 41 on Sunday and my Dh is 43 and we are trying. I only ovulate every second month or so. My cycle is 27 days approx so 27-14 means I should ovulate on day 13. I only start taking the tests from day 8. We use the digital tests. The best sperm is 3-5 days old as sperm dies and slows each day after that so be sure to be having s3x on day 8/9 regardless. You could also get a semen analysis easily done and that will clear up any outstanding q's. edited by hilsbils on 26/07/2012

How many days did you use the sticks for, you might just have missed your fertile day or even the fertile time of day (morning vs afternoon). I found when trying for my first baby that i would get a clear LH surge on around day 14, 28 day cycle (I used the sticks where the line gets darker, not the smily face ones) however with my second baby I did not show any real LH surge, in the that the line got slightly darker but still less than the control line. I was convince this meant I wasn't ovulating, but then one month I realized I felt a small cramping pain, a bit like a period pain, on around day 15, and wondered if that was me "feeling" ovulation, ovulation stick still showed no surge but we tried twice that day and are now expecting a baby girl in September. So if you can't get the sticks to work, then do the charting/cervical mucous/feeling ovulation etc and basically just [b'>do it a lot[/b'> between days 10 and 15 (if you have a 28 day cycle). You can get a blood test (actually two blood tests at different time of your cycle) that will check the hormone levels in your blood to see if you are ovulating. Has your husband been checked out too? that and the blood test for you would be two simple fertility tests to get done if you were worried, his wee guys/gals might be getting a bit sluggish in which case you might need IUI, but give the charting a go first. :) Good luck!!!
