Where to buy "Persian" carpets?

Ladies, I'm looking for a decently priced "Persian" (or Kashmiri) carpet/rug, about 1.5x1m. Have looked at the shops in MoE, but the cheapest one was Dhs 3000, and it didn't seem that great. I don't know much about buying carpets, so any advice would be appreciated. How many knots, what % silk to cotton, which shop, etc. My budget is around Dhs 5000, but I want to get something decent for that price (i.e. don't want to be overcharged because I don't know much about carpets).

TIA

We also went to Sheba and found them very helpful. We had been to a few in the Blue Souk but visited his store based on the recommendations on the forum. He bought a selection of carpets to our villa, left them with us for a few days, then the day he came back he bought some more options. Tell him the quality you want/silk/wool etc and roughly maximum you want to pay. I found them to be much cheaper than the malls of course. Love the rug we bought from him. We also got a certificate with ours stating it was an Iranian carpet and the family who made it, not sure if that means much? edited by TimTam on 03/03/2013 Rashad guarantees his carpets and I am sure will be happy to return your money should you discover that the carpets you bought are not what you thought. I have found Him to be very reasonable and honest. He operates by word of mouth, referrals, and his reputation so doesn't want residents here to buy from him and then be unhappy.

With regards to quality, I don't know a lot, however, generally speaking: quality of materials - silk, cotton, wool, synthetic silk knots per square centimetre - the larger the number of knots (ie, the smaller the knots), the greater the quality I suggest you speak to Mr Rashad at Sheba Carpets at the Blue Souq - contact details in an earlier post - he is very knowledgeable and honest. He has a full and varied range of carpets from Iran and Afghanistan.

The Blue Souk in Sharjah is a very good place to buy a carpet. Bargain, but if they see that you are really interested, they will help you and not overcharge you. Make sure they know you're not a tourist though.

Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions. Any advice on what I should be asking about in terms of the carpet quality?

Global Village carpets in Iran pavillion are anything but dodgy, I promise u! I'm Iranian and have my entire house covered in carpets since hubby's from a famous carpet producing city. The carpets in global village are real and some of them a antiques, which I only wish I could afford! Of course it would help if you go shopping with someone who knows their carpets, because there's always room for bargaining. I also know a shop in baniyas, however need to locate the number. Will post as soon as I've found it.

I have bought nearly all my Persian and Afghani rugs from Sheba Carpets in the Blue Souq n Sharjah. Mr Rashad is very reasonable and offers great a/s service - washing etc. I recommend them for quality and price - look around first and then visit Rashad - gives you good basis upon which to negotiate. His contact number is : +971 50 6786168. He has a fabulous selection.

Would they be real? There are loads of shops around Baniyas Square, Deira area that sell Persian rugs. I agree, Deira would be your best bet. Global Village in itself is 'dodgy' to me!
