Hi, I had a melanoma which was missed by a dermatologist both in Australia and here. It was only removed at my insistence so agree that it is also vital to monitor yourself. But I think this is limited to some degree so I go to Dr Nasir at Dermacare 04 342 0088. I know some people think he can be over cautious but I absolutely trust him. They also offer mole mapping which you can repeat every 6 to 12 months dependant on your situation. It's basically a special photo of each mole close up so they can track any changes. HTH

Thank you.... Yeah I see he is a plastics but apparently he is a certified dermatologist too, although there seems to be some debate about that. Have you had experience with Dr. Carol, is she thorough? Thanks again My colleague uses her and yes At home at the poster above states you would go to the GP first but here that isnt always an option I have 2 bad ones removed off my back and it was obvious they were nasty If you see changes in them it is always worth getting them checked out

I am not sure there is any evidence that random mole checks by dermatologists are required by the general population. In Australia (which has the dubious title of the highest rate of skin cancer in the world) most people see their GP if they have concerns. From there a GP would refer if and only if there was a concern. The best thing for skin checks isn't a one off visit to a specialist...it is long term monitoring of one's own skin for changes (get your partner/friend to check your back where you can't see). a mole/spot changing is much more indicative of a problem. the back in the 80/90s there was a move to removing spots that could potentially be dangerous in the future, but this is no longer the case. If possible and to put your mind at rest and to seek up to date information I would recommend a trip to an Australian trained doctor. Australian doctors would be the most well trained in skin cancer. I speak here from experience....I had a melanoma in my early 30s. detected by a normal GP after I noticed it changing. And now I see a dermatologist every year during the summer holidays in Australia. His advice is to monitor my own skin for changes. Depending on where you grew up and what colour your skin is - is the key risk factor. So if you are dark skinned and grew up in England....you have a very low chance of skin cancer.

Hey ladies, I have been looking on the forum for information about getting skin/mole checks but there are only a couple of outdated threads! I am just wondering if anyone can gove me a good recommendation for this. I have alot of moles and have never had a check up before but it is something I feel I should do. I see Dr. Jaffer Khan was being recommended, is this still the case? Thanks :) Dr Carol Lecleur at Healthcare city Dr Khan is a plastics guy never knew he did moles
