Thanks Ginnee. I have some leftovers. Will add sweetened milk now and keep it for later tonight. I had to stop myself from taking a 2nd serving since it's so high caloried!! Last night I sprinkled some water over it and microwaved it and it was restored.

Alismum do you make haleem at home? Can you pls share your recipe? also can you pls recommend a persian recipe that uses minced lamb (fried it yesterday with some onion) Last thing, where can i get dried sabzi for sabzi polo and ghorma sabzi??? Plsssssss Can I be honest Swissroll I really dislike Haleem. My SIL made it last time she was with us (I watched her) and she served it for breakfast and I really didn't take to it, so I never made it since. Anyway here's a recipe similar to what she made (one of my fave Persian food sites - Azita). Recipe says wheat, but I could have sworn she used pearl barley. It's possible you can use either I think. It's very popular for Suhor. [url=http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yMEJcplkQAw/S0EFoKo0icI/AAAAAAAAAhs/8Jf1WLYGUcg/s400/Haleem%20Sobahaneh%20Irani.jpg'>Haleem[/url'> [url=http://turmericsaffron.blogspot.ae/2010/01/haleem-wheat-and-meat-persian-breakfast.html'>from here[/url'> Ingredients: 3 cups pelted wheat, rinsed, soaked overnight in 4-5 cups of water, drain before cooking 2 pounds meat (preferably lamb neck or turkey breasts) Water 3-4 cups milk Salt to taste _________ Toppings: Cinnamon Butter, melted Sugar [url=http://turmericsaffron.blogspot.ae/2010/01/haleem-wheat-and-meat-persian-breakfast.html'>For recipe go here[/url'> <em>edited by Alismum on 11/07/2013</em>

I had the oven on about 180 celcius for 10-15 minutes. i usually just 'eye it' and take it out when golden on top. If you did find it dry, and have left overs you could always pour some sweetened milk over it and let it soak into it in the fridge over night. Did anyone cook Umm Ali last night? Thanks Ginnee, I did it and it was super easy and DH loved it. Unfortunately I cannot tolerate rose water and was afraid that it was too much... but nope, he ate a load and then re-heated more for suhoor, so well done you! I made it yesterday but half the quantity because I didn't want leftovers to keep digging in to. It's sinful! It was yummylicious even though I think I left it in the oven a bit long and it turned out a little dry. Can you tell me how many minutes did you keep it in the oven for and the temperature? Thanks Ginnee. I have some leftovers. Will add sweetened milk now and keep it for later tonight. I had to stop myself from taking a 2nd serving since it's so high caloried!!

Yes I would say about a million calories!! I used to make it like DP's mum, with cream on top, but then decided it didn't need that naughty cream on top as well! so glad you ladies liked it :) It's a shame you cant tolerate Rose Water CW, you could always substitute with Orange Blossom Water, would still be yummy. Thanks Ginnee, no, It is better for me not to like it;) I had a bad experience with Umm Ali as a child, and it would never get past my lips regardless of any blossom water! How can one possibly have a bad experience with umm ali? ;)

Very similar to Ginnee's but no rose water and then a layer of whipped cream and flaked almonds over the top before it goes in the oven. Shamefully laden with all things naughty!!

So what time do we have to stop eating, Marroosh? I would like to eat as late as possible and this morning I was finished by 3:45 and that is way too early. It was fabulous! Going for Iftar tonight at one of the hotels and have already told my friend, no desert until I get home for the remainder left :-) Already given my mother the recipe in UK!! quote=Ginnee'>It's so more-ish, yes!! I love this recipe, Im always dissappointed when I go out, as the Umm Ali in restaurants just isn't as good as my recipe :). I frequently buy packs of mixed croissants from Geant for 10 dhs and use them for it. They have plain, chocolate, fruit swirls, cheese and zaatar. I just tear them up (not the cheese or zaatar ones though!), tearing around the chocolate (wouldn't be nice in umm ali), the fruit I leave as umm ali has fruit anyway. Just makes it more affordable. Did anyone cook Umm Ali last night? Yes! Made with the earlier posted recipe - it was absolutely deeeeelicious!! Needed it after my evening stresses........in fact, woke up at 2am, cam downstairs for a glass of water and had some more Um Ali!!! edited by Alaingirl on 11/07/2013

But the problem is I can't hear it where I live. My friend who lives near me can hear it and said it was at 4.15. If you're in Dubai just tune in to Dubai 1 as the adhaan will play on the TV. (around 4:15).

My Moroccan friend made this amazing lentil soup, I made a chicken salad and some cheese puffs. We had dates and water of course. That was all, and it was more than enough for the 3 of us. I am having the same problem with the fajr timings. Some sites say 4.06 but the adhan seems to go at 4.15. Some people follow "imsak" time which is like 5-10 minutes before fajr that people stop eating. It was on Gulf News previously but they removed it as we can continue to eat until fajr adhan.

Mmm my stomach's rumbling reading all this!! Last night for iftar we kept it simple..will vamp things up when we have guests but last night's fare was quite funny as DH is Syrian so in their tradition, the first iftar has to consist of 'white' dishes to signify purity! So I made mushroom soup (white enough I think), cheese sambousek (also white), shakriyeh (a Syrian style lamb stew with a yoghurt sauce), vermicelli rice and salad (which was colourful, but couldn't be helped!) Had fresh fruit for afters and rice pudding.
