Also I would recommend calling The Brain & Learning 04-4534170. I know that when mu children were doing brain training with them, there was an autistic boy and his mum was very happy with his progress and especially attention. Good luck!

Having also done brain training at The Brain & Learning for both children (started with one with focus concentration issues and got such fantastic results that we decided to enrol the other too), I certainly think that it is a great idea to try it first. In fact a really great friend of mine who has his branding company (one of the most respected in Dubai) suspected he had ADHD too after his son was diagnosed. He did the program with his son and he says that the whole thing has been life changing not just for the two of them but for the whole family. He keeps saying I wish I had done this when I was a boy! No point dwelling, but I think it is a great opportunity when things like this are available to us nowadays.

I was put under the same pressure and one of the mums on this forum directed me to the Brain & Learning (04-4534170) to find out what the root of the problem was. She encouraged me to resist the push from the school as it would have led to greater dependency from there on! Also she said to me to volunteer myself for the first few weeks (sadly I work full time and couldn't do it) but she said that way I could see and understand what is going on. Schools do want an easy life for themselves and their recommendation is not always the best choice for your child. No mother wants her child to suffer but if you see the situation first hand, you can judge it better.

And I would say the same! I get so many amazing leads from Expatwoman, but I have to say the best one to date was doing brain training at The Brain & Learning. No one says it's easy but worth every penny and every minute you invest in it to get a confident child who is able to work independently and loves learning. I think start with the assessment and see for yourself!

Have you tried brain training instead of a dyslexia tutor. I know others have said this before by I know the hourly rate was much lower than what you say and they work to rewire the brain as opposed to just give strategies for coping. Give them a call 04-4534170. At those costs I think you should at least explore alternatives!

Not all private schools follow the National Curriculum and all its stipulations. They only do GCSEs and A levels. National Curriculum refers to Key Stages 1 -5 with adherence to SATs and other government requirements. In terms of what kids are taught the content is the same. The requirements on British Curriculum are more relaxed, that's all.

Hi there Sometimes I think homework was designed to torture parents. But in all seriousness, homework time was awful in our house. What I had not understood was the reason my child was falling behind (and the school kept making me feel awful about it and the future!) was that her cognitive skills were too low. These are supposed to be tools we use for learning and if they are weak, you are a poor learner and if they are razor sharp you love learning. In fact another mum on this forum was the one to point me to the Brain and Learning (04-4534170) for an assessment that told me what the root of the problem was. They do have a survey on their website for you to try before paying for an assessment. The assessment was 500 (this is over a year ago, but I think it is still the same) and we got the results in a couple of days. My child needed brain training to sharpen her tools (not all kids do). This has really helped with concentration and reading and now homework struggle is a thing of the past. Most importantly it has really boosted my girl's confidence and independence. I was encouraged by the school to pay for a shadow. But that would have just made the school's life easier and the problem would have been there. So my advice is at least try having the assessment and understand what is going on. And then make an informed choice. A lot of the suggestions below would not have helped my child who was already overwhelmed and whose resistance and tantrums were just the outward signs of her pain inside. I don't often post, but brain training really has changed her life and certainly mine. So much so I had my other child do it too. edited by Honey72 on 07/09/2013

This is the first time I have put a negative post, but I do not want to have you go through this. We started the process of getting our garden done (pool and landscaping) in late July. I searched this forum and then called different companies for quotes. We had a meeting- said that they would only give us a quote and a price, if they receive 4000 AED for the garden design. All other companies, in the meantime, met with us, took our requirements, design preferences etc. and gave us preliminary designs and quotes free of charge. As there were some recommendations on this forum, we decided to go ahead and paid 4000 AED for the design. We spent a good amount of time outlining what we were looking for, emailed them photos and ideas that appealed to us. The promise was an initial design within 1 week to 10 days. We did not hear any thing from them for over 2 weeks. They then said that they were too busy and they will do their best. When we asked for our money back for not doing our job, they said that the money was non refundable but still did not give us any designs. To cut a long story short, after torturing us for over 6 weeks, we got a CAD drawing of the current outline of our garden with none of our requirements and ideas. What was worse was that they had not even measured the garden. All the dimensions were completely (not just a bit) wrong. We had 2 revisions to the design for the 4000 but they just stopped answering our emails. 4000 AED gone, nothing to show for it. Thankfully, we have now designed our own garden, the pool is in and the landscaping under way. I just feel that if you promise to DESIGN and charge for it, then surely you need to do something! I am thankful we did not give them the contract!
